To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, GEORGE SoHMrr'r, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Glenmont, in the county of Albany and State of New York,'have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Dirigible Headlights, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dirigiblefi headlights, and the object of. my invention is to provide a headlight adapted to be placed on an automobile and to be moved simultaneously with the change in direction of the machine, governed by the direction of movement of the wheels, or which {my be held rigidly in position when desired; together with such elements and combinations as are hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
l-accomplish these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the standard, B, Imount a crank shaft, I, provided with two offsets, M, N. T0 the crank shaft, L, at the offset, ill-,1 attach the link, 10, secured to-the boltQK. At the offset, N, tothe crank shaft, L, I attach the link, 11, connecting with the stud, O.' On the squared end of the crank shaft, L, extending beyond the standard, B, I place the lever disk, 8, which has a square opening therethrough for the reception of the similarlv formed end of thecrank shaft, but-permitting a reciprocatory"motion of the lever disk on the crank shaft.- The lever disk, 8,
provided with a lever arm, 12-. restszagainst the plate, 9, through whichlhe crankshaft, L, passes and which is preferably provided with a collar, 13, inserted in the opening of the standard, B, as shown in Fig. 1. The springs, t, may be mounted on a suitable pin, 23, or in any suitable manner.
The gear, It, is preferably constructedas shown in Fig. 8, in which a horizontal disk portion, 1, is provided with the rals'ed, rounded portions, 7 r and r spaced equally from each other and raised above the disk portion, 2'. On the lamp post, A, 1s a gear in the form of a disk, a, provided with projecting arms, a, a a and a so arranged in reference to the projections, r, r and a on the gear, R, that the points will engage the projections readily without jar or hesitation. The arms, a, a being preferably pointed and formed to make connection smoothly between them and the projections and without any lost motion.
Attached to the'gear, R, is a stud, V, to which is secured a link, V attached to the rodflV, which has at its end a coupling, X, which is secured to the wheel knuckle, not shown. By this arrangement of the coupling,"rod, link, stud, and gear the direction of the movement of the wheelwill be communicated to the lamp post which will be rotated thereby. 7-;
lVhen the position of'the lever disk, 8, and lever arm, 12, attached thereto is such that the bolt, K, is inserted into the recess, J, in the plate, E, the stud, 0, will be so acted upon by the link, 11, and offset, N, that the gear, R, will be away from the gear, a, and as a consequence the lamp post and lamp secured thereto will be held rigidly in position in connection with the chassis of the machine. ,VVhen the lever arm, 12, is moved to the position indicated by the parts shown in Fig. 10, the bolt, K, will be with drawn from the plate, E, but the stud, O, has not yet been raised suiiiciently to bring the gear in connection with that on the lamp post.'- A further movement of the lever arm, 12, will place the locking parts in the position shown in Fig. 11, in which the bolt, K,
is out of connection with the plate, E, and the stud, O, has brought the gear, R, in register with the gear, a. In this position the lamp post, A, is moved by the changed direction of the movement of the wheels of the car; When in this position the rib, 14,
on the lever disk, 8, is in register with the groove, 15, on the plate, 9, and the lever disk; 8, is held in connection with the plate, 9, by. the spring, 17, thereb preventing an unintentional movement of t e lever arm, 12.
When the operator desires to break connection between the gears, he simply moves the lever arm, 12, in a direction opposite to what he does in making the connection and the gear, R, will be thrown out of engage meat with the gear, a, after which a furtherI-m'ovement of the lever arm will cause the bolt; K, to enter the recess, J, and lock the plate, E.
By my arrangement lamps so placed that they will cause a light to be thrown in the direction in which the machine is going, even when making a curve, and as soon as the wheels are turned, which of course is very desirable especially when traveling on a comparatively unknown road. I can also by my invention disconnect the lamp post from the wheels so that in the daytime the lamps will not be subjected to this movement.
The bent rods, 20, may be used for supporting ,the lamps (not shown) on the plates, E and c.
-This application ditlersfrom my application filed December 28th, 1910, and which was allowed August 18th, 1911, among other I am able to have the things in that I have provided here a step I by step rotatable means for locking the lamp post and for breaking engagement with the gear connecting the lamp post with the wheel knuckle.-
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a dirigible headlight, the combination of a lamp post; a standard in which the lamp post rotates; a gear on said lamp post; a plate attached to said lamp post; ball bearings between said plate and the upper portion of said standard; a rod carrying a gear adapted to mesh with the gear on said lamp post; step by step"rotatable means for locking said plate and breakin engagement with the gear on the rod an that on the lamp post and conversely.
2. A dirigible headlight comprising a lamp post; means for locking said lamp post rigidly in position; a gear attached to said lamp post; a'rod; a gear attached to said rod; means for connecting said rod with the wheel knuckle; means for step by step bringing said two gears into engagement and unlocking said lamp post.
3. A dirigible headlight comprising a lamp post; means for mounting said lamp post so'that it may be rotated; a gear carried by said lamp post; a plate attached to said lamp post; a rod; a gear connected therewith; means connecting said rod to the wheel knuckle; means for looking or unlocking said plate and by a separate, independent, progressive movement disc0nnectmg the two said mentioned gears or making connection between them, substantially as described. i r A 7 4.
