A further object ofthe invention is to provide in conjunction with the clamp a body forming a casing head portion for the same adaptedto be attached to the end ofV well casing through which the rod is projected, the said body having ports througlh t e Awhich water and 'samples pumped from bottomiof a well may be passed.
A` further 'object of the' invention is to provide in the body a jaw mounted for movement transversely of the opening through which the rod passes, with means for moying the'said jaw and holding the same in an adjusted position. Also a shaft isjournaled in the body and'carriesa jaw which is keyed thereon, suitable means being 'rovided for turning the said shaft, wherey its jaw is caused to impinge against the sideof the rod and hold the same.
'Still another object of the invention is to'provide' a rod clamping casing head having opposed rod-gripping members, one of said members being adjustable to accommodate a'larger or smaller rod, and in this connection to providemeans whereby the jawqforming onejoff the rod gripping members may be readily removed when desired in order to replace it, or4 held from any accidental removal when in use.

The clamp consists of a'bodly 1 formin a casing head and adapted to e connecte t the upper end of the well pi e. Said body has a vertical passage 2 an the upper portion of` the bodyI is 'enlarged and transversely slotted asat` 3. The lower p0rv,tion of the' body 1 is 'threaded' for engage'- ment with the upper endof a lwell casing designated 4. Preferably the body has, screw threaded engagement with the casing 4 so as to provide a permanent connection between the body and the casin" The body 1 is provided at a p'oint belowt e slot 3 and immediately aboveA the' screw threaded lower end with a port 5 which 'atitsinner end enters the vertical opening 2 and terminates at its outer end at the surface of the 'said body.` A jaw 6 is Slidably mounted in the inner portion' of the slot 3. The jaw 6 is provided upon its yback with inwardly disposed spaced iianges 7 `and upon'its front. side with ridges or teeth 8. The side of the block carrying the teeth' 8 is curved as shown in the drawing. The body 1 is provided at vthe sides of the slot 3 and above the upper end of 'the vertically disposed opening 2'with inwardly disposedflanges 9 un;- der which the jaw. 6 may pass and which will prevent the jaw 6 from moving vertically 'out of the said slot when the said jaw is under the said ianges. When the 'jawis under the flanges9 there is sufficient space for the jaw to be slipped vertically. out. of the-slot 3 of the body 1. A screw l() is .threaded through the end of the body 1 at the inner end of the slot 3 and is provided at its inner end with a head 11 which is slidably received between the anges 7 of the jaw 6. This head 11 is of such sha e that the screw is free to rotate with re ation to the jaw but the jaw will move 1ongitudinally with the screw. However, when. the jaw is moved `to the inner portion of the slot 3 in the body 1 the flanges 7 and the said jaw may be moved transversely with relation to the screw and lifted out of (che said slot. The screw` 10 is provided at lts outer end with a head 12 to which a wrench or other implement may be applied for the purpose of turning the screw.
It will be seen that this construction provides means whereby the jaw 6 may be shifted outward from beneath the lugs 9 so as to permit the jaw 6 to be vertically shifted and thus removed from its engagement' with the screw 10. Thus the jaw 6 may be readily renewed or repaired whenever necessary. When the jaw 6 is shifted inward into its pipe-gripping position, however, it will be held from any vertical move ment by the lugs 9 and thus can not beaccidentally detached from the screw 10.
The body 1 is provided in its opposite sides at that end portion adjacent the outer end of the slot 3 with openings 13 which are notched as at 14 at their forward edge portions to permit the insertion of a key 17 A shaft 15 is journaled in the openings 13 and is provided at its intermediate portion with a channel 16. A key 17 is seated in the channel 16 and a jaw 18 is mounted upon the intermediate portion of the shaft and is provided with a slot.19 which receives the key 17. A set sci ew 20 passes transversely through the jaw 18 and engages the intermediate portion of the shaft 15 and holds the jaw in position upon the shaft. The inner end of the jaw 18 is cam shaped as at 21 and is provided with teeth or ridges 22. These teeth or ridges 22 are transversely disposed with relation to the teeth 8 carried by the jaw 6.
The ends of the shaft 15 project beyond the outer sides of the body 1 and are hexagonal or noncircular as at `23 in order that an Ioperating lever 24 may be applied to one end. f A foot treadle 26 of any desired pattern may be applied to the shaft.
By this arrangement of the parts ofthe clamp it will be seen that a drill rod 25 may be passed through the vertical opening 2 in the body 1 down into thepipe section 4 connected to the said body. By supporting the drill rod and its attachments the shaft 15 may be. turned so that the jaw 18 will be carried away from theside of the rod. Then the rod and its attachments may be loweredgradually and when in a desired position the shaft 15 may be turned so that the cam end 21 of the jaw 18 will be moved against the side`v ofthe rod 25. Thus the rod will be held against gravity in the position in which it is placed. By adjusting the screw 10 the jaw 6 is moved in the slot 3 to accommodate rods of different diameters. When it is desired to pump water or samples of material from the bottom of the well in which the tube 4 is located it is not necessary to remove the clamp from the upper end of the tube, for the reason that the water and the said material may pass up out of the pipe 4 and the body 1 through the vertical opening 2 and the port 5.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A rod cla-mp comprising a body provided with a slot, a jaw pivotally mounted in the slot at one side of .the body, a jaw slidably mounted in the slot at the other side ofthe body, the last mentioned jaw having at its outer portion i 1iturned spaced flanges, the body having at the upper portion of its slot' and at lthe opposite sides thereof inturned spaced Hanges which are positioned from the end of the slot a distance greater than the transverse breadth of the last mentioned jaw plus the horizontal length of the flanges carried by the said jaw, the last mentioned jaw adapted to slide along the bottom of the slot and under the flanges carried by the body toward and away fromy the pivoteld jaw, a screw bolt threaded through the body at one end of the slot and having a head which is received between the flanges carried by the slidable jaw, the parts being so arranged that as the screw bolt is turned the jaw with which it is in engagement is'moved .positively toward or away from the pivoted block and the slidable jaw adapted to be lifted out of the slot in the body when the said slidable jaw is beyond the edges' of the flanges carried by the body and which project into the slot thereof. v
