The skids ot' my improved log nnloader are indicated at' '1. These `skids are provided with skidways i. The skids are supported by blocks or posts il and under the ends et the skids are sheaves i, they axles 5 of which have their 'bearings G secured on the outer sides of the end 'iostsor blocks. 'lhe usual endless cables 7, which operate below the skids are engaged with the sheaves and the. lower leads ot' the endless cables are partly coiled on operatingdrums S, the said drums being fixed on a shaft 0 which is-mounted in bearings 10 and is provided at one end with a large spur gear 11. This spur gear is engaged by a pinion 12 on a reversible engineshaft 13, and, hence., when the engine shaft is driven in one direction or the other the gears and drums hereinbetore described cause the endless cables to move longitudinally along the skids according lo the direction in which the engine shaft is driven.

ln accordance with my invention, I provide carriers 14 which are arranged to move longitudinally in the skidways and each of which is provided on its under side with an anchor 15 whereby itis connected to the upratenta Dec. 24,1912.

Each :arrier -is provided with longitudinal vertical recesses 1G for the reception of dogs or log engaging devices` 17, cach of which is pivotally mounted at one end in one of the said recesses upon a pivot pin or other like device 18 which extends transversely through thecarrier. Hence, one end of each dog may be raised and lowered. In connection with each dog, I employ a spring 19 for raising the same to an inclined `position so that its free end may project above the upper side of the carrier and to limit the upward movement of the clogs or log engaging devices, I provide chains 2O each chain having one end secured to one of the dogs or log engaging devices, as at 21 and the other end secured as at 22 in one of the recesses of the carrier. lt willbe understood that tho carriers are operated back and forth in the skidways by means ot' the endless cables and their connections hereinbefore described. lVhen the carriers are moved in the opposite direction to that indicated by -the arrow in Fig. 1. their dogs slide under the logs on the skids and when the carriers are moved in the direction indicated by the arrow in.
