JOSEPH ZALOWITZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAT-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 30, 1912.
Patented Dec. 24, 1912'.
Serial No. 674,300.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn ZALOWITZ, a citizen of the- United States, resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Hat-Fasteners; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it, appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention, inverted from its position in the hat. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the invention as applied to a hat. The positions of the pin stems and their prongs when pulled outwardly being shown in dotted lines.
The invention relates to improved means for fastening ladies hats to the hair of the wearer so that they will not readily become displaced upon the head, said means being plapable of easy release for removal of the The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral 1 designates a hat, to which my invention is shown as applied; 2 is a carrier tube having supports 3 of rigid material, preferably metal, extending downward from the inside of the top of the hat, and adapted to be sewed or secured thereto, and 4:, 4 are the pin stems, in line with said tube, the inner ends of said stems being capable of movement of reciprocation in the opposite ends of said tube, and the outer portions of the stems extending through opposite perforations in the sides of the hat, and being provided each with a head 5 at its outer end.
The carrier tube 2 is adapted to be held by its supports in the hat at the place ordinarily occupied by a bandeau, should such be used, and is provided with a lateral extension 6, consisting preferably of a pair of prongs 7, which rests upon the hair of the wearer, and in connection with said tube, acts to support the hat in proper relation to the wearers face. The prongs 7 have ex tension laterally outward and downward and are adapted to enter the hair to assist in the support of the hat. 1
Each pin stem is provided with an inwardly extending pair of prongs 8, the members of each said pair being located at the sides of the carrier tube and below the same, the two pairs of prongs extending toward each other, and the cross arm 9 of each pair having stop engagement with the end 10 of the tube to limit the inward movement of the prongs. Spring means are provided to return the pin stems and their prongs to normal position when pulled outward, said means consisting preferably of a coiled spring 11 located within the carrier tube, having attachment at its ends at 12 to the inner end of each pin stem.
In use, the hat is placed upon the head with the central pronged extension (3 resting upon and entering the hair to support the hat in position, the pin stems and their prongs being first pulled outwardly against the tension of the springs, and then released, when they will move back automatically to normal position, and at the same time engage within the wearers hair to securely hold the hat. When the hat is to be re moved, the pins and their prongs are pulled outward in the same manner, when an upward movement of the hat will remove the pronged extension 6 from the hair.
My fastener is not visible at all from the outside, being entirely hidden within the hat when worn, the pin stems and their heads appearing like the usual hat pins.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hat fastener having a carrier, means for securing the carrier to the hat, a laterally extending stationary pin upon the carrier, and a longitudinally extending springacting pin supported by the carrier.
2. A hat fastener, having a carrier tube, upwardly extending rigid supports carried by said tube adapted to be secured to the top of a hat, a stationary laterally extending pin carried by and having rigid connection With said tube, spring-acting movable pin stems having engagement with opposite ends of said tube, and longitudinally In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
JOSEPH ZALOWITZ.
and oppositely extending pins carried by Witnesses: said stems and arranged at substantially t AARON MARCUS, right angles to said stationary pin. S. LEvmN.
