Application filed August 21, 1251,11. Serial lfl'o. 645,114. J y
T o all whom 'it mag/concern;
Be it known that I, EnAsTUs D. HALE,
a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Bellevue, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and iisel ful Improvements in Horse-Collars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, fand` exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use t-hev` same.
This invention relates to horse collars and particularly contemplates the construction of a device of this nature, wherein the same may easily be attached tothe horses neck without placing the same over the head of the animal, as has vbeen the custom heretofore.
The present invention also contemplates they construction of a collar wherein the. bulking shape which has heretofore been an objectionable feature, may be eliminated, and to further provide the means whereby Vthe collar may belightened in weight and adjusted to the animals neck.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter described, claimed and illusltrated in the accompanying drawings,
wherein:- p
Figure 1 is a prospective view of a horse collar constructed in accordance with the v v.present invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary,
central, vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the terminal of one of the sections of the neck shield.
The horse collar forming the subject matter of this invention comprises a U shaped main body portion which is provided with 'pads similar in construction toV the collar i `now in use, the upper terminals of said body portion being tapered to conform and coni nect with the neck shield. Each terminal ofthe body portion is provided with a pair of buckles,` which cooperate with straps carried by the main portion of the neck shield.
v On each side of the central or main portion tion of the collar, saidbody portion being U shaped in construction, and having the `upper terminals thereof connectedby a neck shield, asfwill hereinafter be rmore fully de i scribed. The `interior of the body portiony l0 is provided with the usual pad, said pad tapering toward the terminals of saidbodyl portion 10 and-permitting the collar adjacent to the neck shield to be substantiallyy the thickness of the leather of which the, body portion` 10 of the collar in the neck' shield is constructed. The terminals 10k of `the body portion 10 of the collar yare provided with the buckles 1,'.which provide af i means whereby the neck shield may be secured tothe collar. f
The neck shield indicated generally `as A, n comprises a central section 12, constructedy of leather or other suitable materials, convexed to conform with the contour of the animals neck. A metal strip 13 is centrally secured to the exterior surface of they section-12, and-vis so constructedthat the trans- 'verselyarranged edges of the same will be bent upwardly; This strip of metall'is provided with a hook 14, which retains the haines" on the collar, and eliminates 'the heavy and undesirable structure heretofore used. A strap 15 is riveted to each terminal of the metal strip 13, said straps extending on each side of the strip 13 and each pro-. n
vided at their terminals with the perforations 16. `The auxiliary sections 17 of the neck shield are sevved` or'otherwise secured tothe longitudinal sides of the central section 12 ofthe neck shield A, and are provided with the keepers 18 on their outer surfaces, to engage the tapered terminals of the body portion 10. y
It will be understood from the foregoing, that the straps 15y in engagement with the buckles 11, and in combination with ythe keepers 18, retain the neck shield yA adjust-y ably iii connection with the body 10.,
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent, is*
In a horse collar, the combination with the body portion having theterminals thereoperating with said yterminals comprising ,a central sectiony and auxiliary sidesections joinedto the longitudinal" sides of the central section, a metal stripceiitrally and lon- 1,)
gitudinally of the central section .to Vsupport the transverse edges of said central strip in In testimony whereof I aix my signature an upwardly curved position, la hook formld in presence of two witnesses.
with said metal stri ada tec to retain t e hames on the collar? andpstraps secured to ERASTUS D' HALE' the terminals of said strip provided with Vitnesses: perforations for attachment to the body J. B. MILLER, portion of said Collar. J. W. MARTIN.
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner o Patents, Washington, D. C.
