To all ivhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. TUCKER. a. citizen of the United States, residing at Frederick, in the county of Frederick and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Driers, of
which the following is a specification.
My. invention relates to fruit driers and meat smokers,
An object of my inventionis to provide a drier that will do its work effectually and cheaply.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide a drier that is water and fire proof.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention, showing a part thereof in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view. of the same. Fig. 3 is aside elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line X-X. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a drawer. Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 8 is a detail view of the frame work of my invention in elevation. Fig. 9 is a sectional view of the frame work taken on the line Y-Y.
In carrying my invention into practice I use a base 1, of plastic material. This base 1 is to be underground and forms the foundation of the drier. A fire box 2 is superimposed over. the foundation 1 and is also made of plastic material. The fire box 2 is fed through the door 3 and has a smoke vent 4 leading therefrom. The drier 6 is mounted over the fire box and is-to be constructed ofmetal.v The outer portion or I shell 6 is to be 'made of-sheet metal while the frame work is to be made of angle and. flat-iron. Two flat strips of iron 7 extend from the bottom to the top of the drier. These strips 7 are at the front and are held from the side sheathing by means of the strips 8. These strips 8 extend from front to back and form braces on to which the sheathing 6 is fastened. The ends of the strips 8 are connected by means of the strips sheathing 6 is fastened. Angle-irons 10 are held away from the sheathing 6 by means of the bent strip 11. These strips 11 are fastened to the strips 8 and to the angleirons 10 and hold the angle-irons 10 the same distance from the sheathing 6 as the '9 which also form braces on to which the strips 7 are held. Angle-irons 12 join the anglefirons 10 and the strips 7 with the angle-irons 10 and make a shelf adapted to receive the drawers 13. Other angle-irons 14 join the strips 7 thereby forming supports on which the angle-irons 12 rest, thus completing the frame and making braces on to which the sheathing 6 may be fastened to, on the drawer side. Angle-irons 15 are placed in between the angle-irons 14. These irons 15 join the strips 7 and also form braces to which the sheathing 6 is fastened.
The number of braces on this one side is necessitated-by the fact that apertures'are cut in the sheathing to receive the drawers 13 and the edges of the sheathing 6 are fastened to these braces 14 and 15.
The drawers 13 are also to be made of metal. 'The corners are joined with wires 16 which act as braces and also help to keep the wire'screen 17, which is the bottom of the drawer, from sagging. The handle 18 is fastened to the drawer by means of the rod. 19, which passes from one sideto the other. This rod not only holds the handle 18 in place, but it also helps to strengthen the drawer. As may be seen by reference to the drawings an air space is left between the drawers 13, and the sheathing 6, which in combination with the wire screen bottoms 17 allows a free circulation of the hot air from the fire in the fire box 2.
The smoke vent 4' is provided with a damper 20, near its top. The vent 4 is connected to the drier by means of the pipe 21 which also has a damper 22 therein. The smoke vent is provided with a cap 23 to keep water from entering the fire box from this source. I
The drier is provided with hooks 24 near its top to receive an apron, of fire-proof material, which is not shown in the drawings and the use of which will be explained later. Handles 25 are placed on the sides of the drier so that the upper portion may be lifted from the fige box and moved away. A ventilator 26 is provided on-the top of the drier.
As I have mentioned before my device may be used either to dry fruit or smoke meats. lVhen used as a fruit drier the fire is built in the fire box 2, the fruit sprinkled over the bottom of the; drawers and the immaterial and has not beenillustrated in the drawings. As the drawers are all the same size and as the bottom one will heat up the fastest beingnearer the fire than the others, they maybe changed around to dry the fruit uniformly.

1. In a device of the character described, a:
fire box, a drier disposed above said fire box, said drier comprising a sheathing, upright angle-ironsdisposed within said sheathing, bent strips disposed between said angle-irons and said sheathing, second angle-irons con-' ing supported thereby, third angle-irons con nected to said first named angle-irons, upright means disposed within said sheathing adapted to support one end of said third named angle-irons, means disposedbetween said supporting means and said sheathing, drawers adapted to slide upon said second and third angle-irons for the purpose described.

In a device of the character described, a drier, a fire box mounted beneath said drier, said drier comprising a sheathing, handle portions on each side of said sheathing whereby the,same may be -carried, upright angle-irons disposed within said sheathing, bent strips disposed between said angle-irons and said sheathing, horizontal angle-irons connecting said first named angle-irons and iving a good i j tothe strips which a ventilator therein,

In a device of the character described, a firebox having a drier superposed thereon, said drier comprising a sheathing spanned at its upper end by. means of an upwardly tapering cover, upright angle-irons disposed wlt'hin said sheathing, bent strips disposed between said angle-irons and said sheathing, a second angle-iron connecting said firstand being su ported thereby, a third angle-iron connected to said first mentioned angle-iron, upright means pipe having connection adapted to support the same, another reinforcing means extending across the bottom of said 7 support said screen bottom for'the purpose angle-iron, means disposed between said sup-1 n orting means and-- said sheathing,. drawers adapted to slide upon said second and third mentioned angle-irons, said drawers comprising a frame Work spanned at its lower side by a section of Wire fabric, reinforcing Wires disposed diagonally across said frame Work, a rod ournaled through said frame 10 Work and having connection with the handle whereby said drawers may be operated for the purpose described.
