TUBULAR LANTERN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 7, 1911.

Be it known that I, FREDERICK Draw, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tubular Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of tubular lanterns in which the air tube is composed of an upright member and top and bottom members which are arranged horizontally, or substantially so, and therefore stand at an angle to the upright memher.
The object of the invention is to strengthen the tube with a view of enabling the same to stand rough usage, which is particularly severe in lanterns which are used by inspectors of rolling stock on railways, and to tie the different members of the tube securely together and to the lantern base.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2 a front elevation of a tubular lantern provided with this improvement.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the two figures.
A represents the lantern base containing the oil pot, B the horizontal bottom members of the air tubes, C the upright members and D the horizontal top members thereof, the latter being connected at their inner ends with the central tube E, all of ordinary and well known construction.
F represents a reinforcing strip of suitable metal which is secured by soldering, retinning or similar means to the outer sides of the three members of each tube, the upper end of the strip being preferably secured underneath the cap G of the central tube. Each strip F extends with its top portion at along the upper side of the top member D of the tube, with the upright portion 0 along the outer side of the upright member C, and with its lower portion 1) along the under side of the bottom member B, and from. the latter downwardly in the form of an oblique brace g to the base A, where the lower end of the strip is secured to the bottom flange of the base.
The reinforcing strip embraces the upper and lower members of the tube and ties these members securely to the upright member, reinforces the corners and also protects the outer sides of the members against contact with objects in carrying the lantern about and against rough usage generally,
- and further connects the tube with the base by an oblique brace which greatly stiifens and strengthens the structure.
I claim as my invention: a
1. In a tubular lantern, the combination with a tube having an upright member, a horizontal top member and a horizontal bottom member, of a reinforcing strip extending along the outer side of the upright member, the upper side of the top member and the under side of the bottom member, substantially as set forth.
2. In a tubular lantern, the combination of a base, a tube comprising an upright member and horizontal top and bottom members, and a reinforcing strip which extends along the upper side of said top member, the outer side of said upright member, the lower side of said bottom member and from the latter to the base, substantially as set forth.
