COMBINED FASTENING DEVICE AND FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1912.
Application filed February 8, 1911. .Serial no. 607,426.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES OBENAUF, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Lima, the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Fastening Devices and Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is primarily designed to provide an eflicient and economical fastening device for concrete posts and the like, whereby the wire may easily be fastened or detached, as the case may be.
A further object is to provide an eccen tric member to quickly operate the fastening means, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the post to which is applied the wire fencing; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the fence post; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of the post; Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are details of parts used in the construction of the present in- Vention.
Throughout the following description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a post which is provided with apertures or openings through each of which the fastening bolt 2 is inserted, said bolt having one terminal bent to form an eye 3 for the purposes hereinafter described. The opposite terminal of the bolt 2 is provided with a transverse opening through which is adapted to pass a retaining pin 6, adapted to retain a collar or ring member 4 provided on its peripheral edge with a trunnion 5. On this trunnion 5 is rotatably mounted an eccentric member 7 which 1s adapted to bear or operate against the post, as will readily be observed. The free terminal of the trunnion is riveted to keep the eccentric member from dislodgment. The fence is applied to the post, after which the retaining rod 8 is inserted through the eyes 8, the upper terminal of said retaining rod being bent and slidably engaged under the locking member 9, which latter is con structed of resilient material and affords sufiicient friction to prevent the said termi- .nal from displacement.
From the foregoing, it will be observed that upon throwing the eccentric member 7 to its operative position, as illustrated in Figs- 2 and 3, the rod 8 is drawn against the post, thereby clamping the fence to said post.
When the clamping members exert a pull upon the vertical rod 8 whereby to clamp the fence to the post, said clamping members produce friction where the rod 8 passes through the former sufliciently to prevent accidental dislodgment of said rod from under the locking member 9.
Having thus fully described my invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In combination with a fence post formed with a plurality of apertures, and fence wires, a retaining rod arranged longitudinally of said fence post for holding said fence wires in engagement with said post, a plurality of fastening elements passing through said apertures, each of which is provided at one extremity thereof with means to engage said retaining rod, a collar mounted near the opposite extremity of each of said fastening elements, a trunnion provided on each of said collars, and an eccentric member rotatably mounted on each of said trunnions adapted to bear against said post and cause said retaining rod to force the fence wires closely against said fence post.
2. In combination with a fence post formed with a plurality of apertures, and fence wires, a retaining rod arranged longitudinally of said fence post for holding said fence wires in engagement with said post a plurality of pins passing through said apertures, each of which has one of its terminals located outside one side of said post and bent to form an eye through which said retaining rod passes, a collar mounted near the opposite extremity of each of said pins at a position outside the opposite side of said post, a trunnion provided on each of said collars, an eccentric member rotatably mounted on each of said trunnions adapted to bear against the adjacent side of said post to cause said retaining rod to force the fence wires closely against said fence post, and means on each of said pins to retain said collars in place.

In combination, a fence post, fence wires, a spring locking member mounted on said post, a retaining rod for holding said fence wires in engagement with said post, said rod having its upper terminal deflected to slidably engage said locking member whereby the rod is held against vertical displacement, said post being provided with transversely disposed apertures, a plurality of fastening elements passing through said apertures, said fastening elements being provided with means for engaging said retaining rod, and an eccentric member pivotally mounted on each of said fastening elements adapted to bear against said post and cause said retaining rod to force the fence wires closely against said fence post.
