To all whomv it may concern Be it known that I, RONALD F. MCFEELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Shoe-Forming Machines, of which the following' description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to shoe forming machines and is shown as embodied in a machine for shaping a lasted shoe to prepare it for the reception of an outer sole.
An important feature of this invention consists in the combination of a reciprocating bottom pounder with a side beater which is so arranged relatively to its actuating mechanism that the beater remains at rest until it has been pressed upon by the work to establish an operative connection wit-li its actuator.
The beater is preferably so mounted that when it is actuated it moves upwardly, as well as outwardly toward the shoe, so that it tends to work the stock toward the edge of the shoe bottom. The side beater is arranged to serve as the side rest for the slice and assist the operator in presenting the shoe in proper relation to the bottom pounder. The side beater may serve the purpose of a guiding device alone when a portion of the shoe is being treated which does not require beating at the side and then, as the operation progresses, and the portion of the shoe is reached which it is desirable to beat on the side, the operative connection of the beater to its actuator may be established by increasing` the pressure of the shoe against the beater. It is characteristic of this beater' that it remains continuously in engagement with the upper and beats the slice by repeated outward and upward impulses as distinguished from blows imparted by moving the beater away from the side of the shoe and then against itas has heretofore been proposed.

It is found to be a great relief to the workman and to insure more uniform and better results to cause the machine to hold jithe shoe in posit-ion to receive the action fof the beaters of which the one shown as Voperating on the bottom of the shoe as well as the side beaters constantly act to force :the shoe laterally away from the machine. example, as the jack shown in my co-pending application Ser. No. 509,684, filed July 20, 1909, of which the present application is a continuation as to subject matter which vis common tol it and to the disclosure in that application. It will be understood from the foregoing that in this embodiment of the invention the heel spindle is a carrier that is movable, either by operating meansconnected with it or by force transmitted through the shoe, to present the shoe to the side beaters, and that such presentation of the shoe in this machine can be made to establish an operative connection betwee normally stationary side beaters and their actuator; and furthermore, that the machine preferably includes means acting' through the shoe carrier and tending normally to press the carrier and the shoe toward the machine, and also means to lock the carrier and the shoe in a position away from the machine.
These and other features of the invention will be more fully explained in connection with the description of the machine in which they are herein shown and embodied vand will then be pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine which is of the same general type as that shown in my earlier application; F ig. 2 is a plan view on line QM?, Fig. 1; F ig. 3 is a perspective view for the purpose of illustrating the side beater.
The column Q of the machine has a head t provided with bearings in which is mounted a shaft 5 which drives, by means of an eccentric stud 3, a il-shaped rocker G. 1n the front face of the rocker is formed a groove by which is made a sliding connection with a link 8, having formed upon it, or upon a block connected with it, a segment rack by means of which the link can be moved upwardly or downwardly toward and from the center of oscillation of the rocker. The rack is engaged for this purpose by a pinion 12 meshing with a segment lever let connected by rod 11 with a foot treadle which, as in the machine of the prior application, is also a starting treadle connected. with a rocking lever 13, Fig. 3, and is arranged to be first depressed for throwing in a clutch 1T that drives the shaft 5, and then to be further depressed for adjusting the link relatively to the rocker to vary the length of the stroke imparted to the link.
rlhe initial depression of the starting treadle to throw in the clutch 17 for driving the shaft 5 at the same time operates through the segment lever 11i to turn the pinion 12 to move the segment rack and linkv 8 upwardly from the lowermost position of the link toward the center of oscillation of the rocker G. This lowermost position of the link 8 is preferably at an approximately neutral point with respect to the axis of Oscillation of the rocker so that in this position the link El has little or no movement imparted to it. Preferably, too, the arrangement is such that, upon depression ot the treadle, the link S will not be moved from its neutral position until after the clutch 17 is thrown in and the shaft 5 is thus started. Thereafter, a slight further depression of the treadle will move the link 8 upwardly a sufficient distance to cause short strokes to be imparted to the said link while, upon still further depression of the tr iadle, the strokes imparted to the link 8 may be lengthened as desired without affecting the clutch and hence without discontinuing the operation of shaft 5.
The link S is joined at its front end to a vibrator 15 for the tool carrier 1G in which is mounted the bottom pounding tool 20. The vibrator and t-he carrier are both mounted on the same pivot or fulcrum 18 and the upper arm of the vibrator extends into an inclosed space in the tool carrier where it is located between two cushions 19, which preferably will be rubber blocks. The shaft 5 is provided with a cam Q5 adapted to operate a vibrator 26 which is fulcrumed in the machine at QS and connected to a tool carrier 80 on which the side beating tools are mounted. A spring 32 normally holds the vibrator and the tool carrier forwardly with relation to the fulcrum 28 and maintains the vibrator out of contact with the cam 25. The tool carrier 30 is at its forward end forked to extend under the bottom pounder and has laterally projecting ledges 34 arranged between a supporting member 85 on the head et and a plate 36 at the lower end of a spring pressed plunger 38. 1t will be apparent from the above description, that the bottom pounding tool Q may be started or stopped entirely independently ot' the side beating tools 41 and while the latter continue in operation merely by so positioning the treadle that the link 8 is in its neutral position without, however, throwing out the clutch 17. Similarly, so long as the clutch 17 is not atfected and the shaft continues to revolve, the side beaters A() may be started or stopped at will independently of the bottom pounder 20 and while that tool Continues in operation.
The shoe carrier herein shown comprises a heel spindle pivotally supported at its lower end by a horizontally adjustable bar The spindle is preferably vertically unyielding but readily adjustable lengthwise as explained in my prior application. rEhe spindle is guided in a yoke member which extends laterally from the trame ot the machine and also within a slide 5G which is movable horizontally in guideways in the yoke 55 and is pressed normally toward the trame of the machine by springs 5S. This slide is arovided at the outerI side of the spindle with a spindle engaging block G0 turning on a horizontal axis and at the inner side with a latch 62 pivoted at 63. The latch has a horizontal arm the end tace ot which is adapted to engage with an end face G5 on the yoke when the spindle and slide are moved away from the machine into position for the removal or application of a shoe and to lock the spindle in this shoe receiving position. A spring 6G actuates this horizontal arm into position to engage the abutment when the spindle is so moved outwardly. An upwardly extending arm of the latch stands in position to be engaged by the spindle when the latch is locked and to be rocked into position to turn the horizontal arm away from the abutment so that merely by pressing the shoe and spindle toward the machine the latch is unlocked and the springs 58 are permitted to draw the shoe into operative relation to the tools. Upon such movement ot' the spindle with the shoe toward the beating tools, the shoe is not only positioned for the action of the bottom beating means, but, at the same time, by such movement of the spindle and shoe, the vibrator 2G is brought into contact with the cam 25 and the operation of the side beating means is started. 1V hen it is desired to move the shoe away from the machine that is done against the resistance of the springs 58 and the latch is automatically actuated by the spring GG to lock the spindle in the remote position. Upon such reverse movement of the spindle and shoe away from the machine the operative connection between the vibrator and its cam is broken and the operation of the side beating tools thereby stopped. rlhus it will be seen that the starting and stopping of the side beating tools are controlled automatically by movement of the spindle or shoe supporting` rest with the shoe toward and from the machine. The yoke and its carried parts are adjustable from and toward the machine and are held in place by the set bolt 70.
Having explained the nature of this invention and fully described a machine embodying the same in the best form now known to me, and having indicated in connection with this description the way in which it is contemplated the machine may be used, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United .States l. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a beater arranged to engage the bottom of a shoe and means for reciprocating that beater, a beater arranged to engage the sides of the shoe adjacent to the portion being treated by the bottom beater, an actuator tor the side beater, said side beater and its actuator being normally held out of operative connection and being arranged to permit operative connection to be established by laterally directed pressure of the shoe, the parts being so arranged that the operation of the side beater may be discontinued at will without interrupting the reciprocation of the bottom beater.
2. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bottom beater, an actuator therefor, a treadle connection for starting and variably controlling the operation of the bottom beater, a side beater, an actuator therefor, and provision for independently controlling the actuation of the side beater while the machine is ruiming.
3. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a beater arranged to operate upon the bottom of a shoe, a beater arranged to operate on the side ot the shoe, and actuating means for said two beaters, said machine having provision by which either beater can be started and stopped while the other beater continues in operation.

A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a reciprocating bottom beater, a reciprocating side beater, and means adapted for actuating said beaters, said machine having provision for separately controlling the operation of the bottom and side beaters including means for permitting the actuation of the side beater to be controlled by the position of the shoe.
5. A machine of the class described, having, in combination with suitable actuating means, means for treating the bottom of a shoe and a beater for treating the side et the shoe adjacent to its edge and arranged to have a component ot movement toward the last bottom as the beater is advanced to- Ward the side ot the last, said side beater being constructed and arranged to be rendered operative or inoperative by changing the position ot the shoe.
(i. et machine of the class described, having, in combination with suitable actuating means, a shoe side beater and guiding means tor causing the beater to be moved upwardly toward the plane ot the shoe bottom as it is advanced, said machine being constructed and arranged to cause the actuation of the beater to be controlled by the position ot the shoe.
7. it machine ot the class described, having, in combination with suitable actuating means, means tor 'treating the bottom of a shoe, a rest for the side ot the shoe presenting a bachivardly and downwardly inclined Vworking tace and adapted to beat the side ot the shoe at times, and means for positioning the shoe vertically which means is arranged to present the shank of the shoe in a` lower position than the torepart, said machine having provision tor permitting the actuation ot' the said beater to be discontinued by the reduced pressure against it as the shoe is moved down the backwardly inclined tace ot the side rest.
S. i-r machine ot the class described, having, in combination, a bottom beating tool, a side rest and a carrier for the rest, an oscillating ifibrator, a link pivotally connecting the vibrator and the carrier tor the rest, and a cam adapted to actuate the vibrator, said machine having provision :tor maintaining` the rest normally in inoperative relation to its actuator and for causing an operative connection to be estz'iblished by a change in the position ot the shoe While the machine is running.
9. A machine ot the class described, having, in con'ibination, a shoe side rest, a carrier tor the rest, a vibrator tulcrumed to a lined support and connected to the carrier, and a cam tor actuating the vibrator, said machine having provision tor holding the vibrator normally away trom the cam and permitting engagement thereof to be effected by varying the pressure ot the Work against the side rest.
10. i machine et the class described, having, in combination, side beating means comprising a plurality oit contacting members arranged to turn independently about a plurality ot aries perpendicular to one another, and mechanism for actuating the beating means to do its Work.
11. A machine ot the class described, havyincassa g, in combination, means for treating the bottom ot a shoe, means adapted to be rendered operative or inoperative by pressure against it for beating the side ot the shoe, and means tor effecting such pressure against the side beater.
12. A machine ot the class described, having, in combination, means tor treating the bottom otl a shoe, means adapted to be rendered operative or inoperative by pressure against it tor beating the side ot the shoe, and means constructed and arranged to hold the shoe against the side beater to render that beater operative, and having provision 'tor locking the shoe away from the side beater.
13. fr machine of the class described, having, in combinatioi'i, a side beater, a continuously ruiming actuator, means tor yieldingly holding the beater out ot position to be driven by its actuator, and means arranged to be rendered operative or inoperative tor holding the shoe against the side beater with a torce to cause the beater to be maintained in operative relation to its actuator.

A machine ot' the class described, having, in combination, means to beat the side ot a shoe, an actuator with relation to which the beater occupies normally an inoperative relation, a shoe carrier, and means to actuate the carrier and, through movement ot the shoe which is mounted on said carrier, cause the beater to be moved into operative relation to its actuator.

A machine ot the class described, having, in combination, an actuator, a normally inoperative beater :tor treating the side ot' a shoe, a shoe positioning means, and means tor actuating said positioning means and, by torce transmitted through the shoe, starting the beater into operation automatically as soon as the shoe is in position to receive the action otl the beater.

A machine ot the class described, having, in combination, an actuator, a normally inoperative side beater, a shoe positioning means, means tor actuating the positioning means and, by force transmitted through the shoe, causing the beater to be started, and means to lock the positioning means in position to permit the beater to remain inoperative.
17. ik machine ot the class described, having, in combination, an actuator, a normally inoperative shoe beater, a shoe positioner, means tor automatically locking the positiener with the shoe an'ay trom the beater, and means tor automatically moving the shoe into operative relation to the beater and effecting the starting oi: the beater when the locking means is released.
18. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, devices for operating on a shoe, a shoe positioner, a slide in which the positioner is guided and which is arranged for movement by force transmitted through the positioner, and locking means for the slide arranged to operate automatically for locking the positioner when it is moved in one direction, and to be unlocked by unusual force applied in the opposite direction.
19. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, devices for operating on a shoe, a shoe positioner, a slide in which the positioner is guided and which is arranged for movement by force transmitted through the positioner, and a spring arranged to pull the slide and positioner inwardly, and a lock arranged to latch automatically to hold the shoe outwardly and to be unlatched by an inward pressure greater than that of said spring.
20. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, the laterally acting beaters 40, the actuator 25 therefor, the spring 32 to hold the beaters normally away from the path of the actuator, the shoe spindle 50, the guide slide 56 therefor, the springs 58 of greater force than the spring 32 to force the beater into the path of its actuator, and the lock 62 arranged on the slide to latch the spindle away from the beater.

A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a shoe beater, the shoe spindle 50, the yoke 55, the slide 56 carried by the yoke and through which the spindle is guided, the springs 58 to pull the spindle laterally toward the machine, and the latch G2 to secure the spindle away from the machine, said machine having provision for adjusting the yoke and slide together laterally from and toward the machine.
A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a shoe bottom beater, and means to actuate it to force the upper downwardly toward the last bottom and laterally inward away from the edge of the last bottom, a shoe spindle, means fo-r rigidly upholding the spindle against the downward action of the beater, means for yieldingly holding the spindle inwardly against the laterally directed action of the beater, and means for locking the spindle away from the beater in shoe receiving position.
23. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, means for forcing the upper material downwardly toward the innersole and inwardly away from the edge of the innersole, means for blocking the shoe, means for actuating the shoe laterally toward the blocking means, and starting and stopping means controlled by such lateral movement of the shoe.
24. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a blocking device for engaging the side of the shoe at and near its edge, an actuator for said blocking device, means positioned by movement transmitted through the shoe to establish operative connection between said actuator and the blocking device, and means for maintaining the shoe in position to cause said operative connection to be continued.
25. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a device for engaging` the side of the shoe at and near its edge, mechanism to actuate said device to block the shoe, said mechanism being arranged to begin actuating said device in response to increase in pressure of the shoe against the blocking device, means for actuating the shoe toward said device and means to lock the shoe away from the blocking device.
26. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, means for treating the bottom of a shoe, actuatingmechanism therefor, devices normally at rest and constantly occupying shoe guiding positions on opposite lateral sides of said means, and means to cause vibration of the said devices to be effected in response to increase in laterally directed pressure of the shoe against said devices.
27. A machine of the class described, having, in combination, a bottom beater, a side beater, operating means for reciprocating the two beaters, and means operating automatically when the work is withdrawn for discontinuing the reciprocation of the side beater without interrupting the reciprocation of the bottom beater.
28. A machine of the class described having, in combination, means for beating the side of a shoe, said beaters having each a contacting member arranged to adjust itself angularly and independently of the other contacting member about an axis extending substantially perpendicular to the plane of the shoe bottom to adapt itself to the shape of the surface being treated and mechanism for reciprocating said beaters to do their work.
29. In a machine for beating shoes, a side beater which is normally at rest, an actuator, therefor, a shoe carrier movable with the shoe toward the side beater, means acting upon the carrier for so moving the shoe, and connections to cause the beater to be automatically put into operation by such movement.
30. In a machine for beating shoes, an actuator, a side beater which is normally at rest, throughout the cycle of said actuator but can be caused to be operated thereby, a shoe carrier movable with the shoe toward the side beater, and connections to cause the beater to be automatically put into operation by such movement of the shoe.
81. In a machine for beating shoes, a side beater Which is normally at rest, an actuator therefor, a shoe carrier movable with the shoe toward the side beater, means acting upon the carrier for so moving the shoe, connections to cause the beater to be automatically put into operation by such movement, and a latch to fasten the Carrier against movement by said means.
32. In a machine ot the class described, means for beating the side ot a shoe; an actuator for the side beating means, said side beating means being` normally held continuously outof operative relation with the actuator throughout repeated cycles of said actuator, and a rest for the shoe arranged for movement to carry the shoe toward the side beatingmeans for causing operative connection between said actuator and the side beating means to be made in response to such movement and. thereon starting the operation of the side beating means.
