oNrrEn snares PATENT OFFICE.
CARGILL GRAHAM, OF KANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
WASHING-MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OARGILL GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county 0]": WVyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vashing- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in washing machines, and the present invention relates more particularly to simple, inexpensive means whereby the agitator ot' the washing-machine may be actuated by hand power with the least expenditure of labor.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now he made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows a vertical section of a washing-machine embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the washing-machine.
1 designates a receptacle for the garments or other articles to be washed. Said receptacle is supported by legs 2, and has an outward and upward extension 8 at one end to support a wringer, not shown. Receptacle 1 is normally closed by a lid 4, secured at one end to the upper portion of the receptacle by hinges 5, so that it may be thrown upward and backward to gain access to the interior of receptacle 1. Lid 4 is provided at its opposite end with a hook 6 adapted to engage an eye 7 on the receptacle, which latter has an outlet 8 at its lower portion normally closed by a plug 9.
10 designates an agitator which in the present instance comprises a pair of conical cups 11, vertical stems 12 carrying said cups, and a pair of parallel rock-bars 13 to the outer ends of which stems 12 are pivotallyconnected, said rock-bars being pivotallysecured at their central portions to a supporting member 14 extending upward from the top of lid 4, which has slots 15 for the passage of stems 12.
16 designates a hand-lever fulcrumed upon a bolt 17, extending through a pair of ears18, at the end of the receptacle opposite extension 3. The lower portion 19 of the hand-lever 16 is bent rearwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, to make room for a conical spring Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 27, 1911.
Patented Oct. 15, 1912.
Serial No. 629,867. r
20 interposed between said lower portion 19 and the adjacent end of the receptacle.
21 designates a connecting-bar pivotallysecured at one end to a V-shaped crank 22, detachably secured at its opposite hookshaped end 23, to a bolt 24, projecting from one side of the hand-lever 16. Crank 22 is secured to the lower rock-bar 13.
In practice, after the clothes and water have been placed in receptacle 1, and the lid 4 is lowered into position over said receptacle, reciprocating motion is imparted to the agitator by moving the upper end of the hand-lever in the direction of arrow (1, which movement compresses the conical spring 20, so that the same will return the upper portion of the hand-lever on its forward stroke without labor on the part of the operator. After the clothes have been thoroughly washed, the water is drained from the receptacle on removing the plug 9, and access is had to the clothes by throwing lid 1 upwardly and backwardly against the hand-lever 16.
Vhile I have shown the preferred constrnction of the invention, I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but reserve the right to make such changes as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In combination with a receptacle and a cover thereon, a vertical member extending upwardly from the cover, a pair of parallel rock-bars pivoted centrally of their lengths to the upper end of said member, stems depending from and pivotally connected to the ends of said rock-bars, an a itator on the lower end of each stem, a \fishaped crank connected at its free upper ends to the lower of said rock-bars on opposite sides of the pivotal point thereof, a hand lever pivoted intermediate of its ends to said receptacle, a spring between said receptacle and the lower end of the hand lever, and a connecting bar between the lower end of said crank and the hand lever.
2. In combination with a receptacle and a cover thereon, a pair of spaced stems having agitators on their lower ends, a member eX- tending upwardly from the cover, means pivoted to said stems and to said member for supporting the stems, a crank connected to said means, a hand lever pivoted intermediate its ends to the receptacle and having its lower end bent outwardly away from the receptacle, a spring between said lower end of the hand lever and the receptacle, and a 10 connecting bar between the crank and the hand lever above the pivot of the latter.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses. v CARGILL GRAHAM.
