Abstract
Metallurgical vessels such as troughs or converters, must be inspected from time to time by personal for maintenance purposes, in particular for equipping with fire-resistant material. In order to make inspection possible, the metallurgical vessel must have time to cool after being switched off which means a considerable time delay in re-starting the vessel. In order to shorten cooling time, the metallurgical vessel has been cooled with a ventilator. However, the cooling performance thereof is not altogether sufficient. According to the invention, the cooling process of metallurgical vessels is accelerated as the metallurgical vessel is impinged upon by a cryogenic cooling agent, for example, liquid or solid carbon dioxide or liquid nitrogen. In a preferred embodiment, the metallurgical vessel is sprayed with a carbon-dioxide snow after being switched off. As a result, the cooling process is considerably accelerated.
