Abstract

A system for sample, trial, and/or full-sized products includes a container defining at least one cavity, a product disk, a cosmetic product, and an applicator. The product disk includes a first side, a second side, and a body extending therebetween. The product disk is positionable adjacent to the at least one cavity of the container. The cosmetic product is at least partially disposed on the first side of the product disk. The applicator has first end that includes an applicator coupling mechanism. The product disk is removably coupled with the cavity of the container and the applicator coupling mechanism.

Description

Cosmetic sampling system

The present disclosure relates generally to cosmetics, hair care products, body care products, and/or skin care products, and more specifically, to systems and methods for sample, trial, and/or full-scale products.

Cosmetics and/or skin care products and applicators may have several different visual features. For example, a product such as a lipstick may be provided in different colors or shades, glosses (e.g., matte, satin, or clear), and/or may have different degrees of transfer resistance. Often, a consumer may wish to test several different products before purchasing a full-sized version of the product. Existing sampling systems often include an excess of disposable packaging, which may be expensive to manufacture and/or may present environmental issues. Current sampling and trial experiences may not mimic a full-sized product and, therefore, may not provide consumers with an experience similar to that of using a full-sized product. More specifically, current sampling and trial experiences are provided in small sizes that may be difficult to hold and may present other ergonomic challenges. In the case where the consumer has various different samples each with separate packaging, the user needs to carry each package on his/her person, which may cause confusion and create obstacles to trial use.

Therefore, there is a need for improved accessories with improved functionality.

Embodiments within the scope of the present disclosure relate to a system for sample, trial, and/or full-scale products. Such a system may include a container defining at least one cavity, a product tray, a cosmetic product, and an applicator. The product tray includes a first side, a second side, and a body extending between the first side and the second side. The product tray may be positioned adjacent at least one cavity of the container. The cosmetic product is at least partially disposed on the first side of the product tray. The applicator has a first end that includes an applicator coupling mechanism. The product tray is removably coupled to the cavity of the container and the applicator coupling mechanism.

In embodiments, the body of the product tray may include a boss and the applicator coupling mechanism may include a track that slidably engages the boss of the body. In some examples, the first side of the product tray is adapted to be disposed within the cavity of the container when coupled with the cavity of the container.

In some forms, at least one cavity may include a stop mechanism that limits planar movement of the product tray. In some methods, the container may also define an applicator cavity adapted to retain at least a portion of the applicator.

In variations of these embodiments, at least one cavity of the container includes a retaining member that retains the product tray in the cavity. In some of these examples, the retaining member may be in the form of at least one of a magnetic member, a sidewall, or a protrusion.

In some examples, the product may be in the form of at least one of a lipstick, foundation, concealer, eye shadow, bronze makeup, eyebrow, solid serum, solid SPF product, skin care item, solid face cream, lipstick, applicator head, brush, solid blush, solid styling stick, dip sponge or carrier, or semi-solid skin care or makeup product.

In some examples, the container may define a second cavity portion. The system may also include a second cosmetic product at least partially disposed on the second product tray. The second cosmetic product may have a visual characteristic that is different from the visual characteristic of the cosmetic product.

According to another aspect, a reusable product system includes an applicator, a product tray, and a cosmetic product. The applicator includes a first end including an applicator coupling mechanism. The product tray has a first side, a second side, and a body extending between the first side and the second side, the body defining a boss. The second side of the product disk can be positioned adjacent the first end of the applicator. The cosmetic product is at least partially disposed on the first side of the product tray. The product tray is removably coupled to the applicator via a sliding engagement between the boss and the applicator coupling mechanism.

In general, according to these different approaches, a sampling and/or trialling system for a product is provided which has a modular character. The sampling system described herein allows users to quickly and seamlessly change or interchange different cosmetic and/or skin care products and applicators for application to their face and/or skin as needed. This system enables the use of reusable components and reduces overall product packaging requirements. In some examples, when a user determines which sample product they wish to purchase in larger quantities (i.e., full size), the system can accommodate such larger quantities as well.

Turning to the figures, a cosmetic and/or skin care product sampling system 100 includes a cosmetic and/or skin care product 101, a container 102, an applicator 120, and any number of product trays 140. Although the illustrated example depicts a lipstick product, in other examples, the product 101 can be any number or combination of different cosmetics and/or skin care products. For example, product 101 may be in the form of foundation, concealer, eye shadow, bronze makeup, eyebrows, solid serum, solid SPF product, skin care product, solid face cream, lipstick, applicator head such as sponge, brush, solid blush, solid styling stick, impregnated sponge or carrier capable of holding liquid skin care or makeup, or semi-solid skin care or makeup.

The container 102 includes a base 104 having an interior cavity 104a, a lid 106, and a hinge 105 that rotatably couples the lid 106 to the base 104. In other examples (not shown), the lid 106 can be operably coupled to the base 104 by any number of suitable methods, such as, for example, a friction fit connection, a threaded connection, a magnetic connection, a vacuum or suction mechanism, etc. Other examples are also possible. The container 102 can be constructed of any number of suitable materials and/or combinations of materials, such as, for example, metals, polymers, etc. As illustrated in FIG. 1, the container 102 has a generally rectangular prismatic shape, although other suitable examples (such as cylindrical shapes) are also possible.

The container 102 also includes a divider or top plate 108 having a plurality of openings 108a (e.g., six) sized to receive a corresponding number of trays 110. The divider 108 may also include an applicator opening 108b sized to receive an applicator 120. Referring to FIGS. 2 and 3 , each tray 110 includes a support boss 111 having a lower surface 111a and an upper surface 111b, a side wall 112 extending downwardly from the support boss 111, and a lower surface 113. The lower surface 111a of the support boss 111 is adapted to be seated on (i.e., positioned adjacent to) the divider 108 such that the remaining sidewalls 112 and lower surface 113 are at least partially disposed within the opening 108a (and thus within the interior cavity 104a of the base 104). In some examples, the lower surface 111a of the support boss 111 (and thus the tray 110) and the divider 108 may be coupled to each other using magnets, adhesives, friction fit couplings, etc. Other examples are also possible.

The side wall 112 of the tray 110 includes a front portion 112a and a rear portion 112b. As illustrated in FIG. 4 , sidewalls 112 and lower surface 113 combine to define a cavity 114 sized to receive and/or retain at least a portion of and/or be disposed on product tray 140 The amount of cosmetics 101. In some examples, the front portion 112a of the side wall 112 may include a stop mechanism to prevent the product tray 140 from advancing in a lateral direction beyond the front portion 112a. More specifically, the front portion 112a of the side wall 112 is at an acute angle relative to the lower surface 113, thereby preventing the product tray 140 from sliding upward and away from the cavity 114 therefrom. In other examples, such stop mechanisms may take the form of friction engagements, grooves, tabs, protrusions, or the like. Other examples are possible. In some examples, rear portion 112b of sidewall 112 may similarly include retaining members to prevent product tray 140 from being moved outwardly therefrom. As illustrated in FIG. 3 , sidewalls 112 have curved, angled surfaces relative to lower surface 113 . However, in other examples, sidewall 112 may be generally perpendicular to lower surface 113 .

5-11, the applicator 120 includes a cap 121, an applicator base 122, and an applicator tube 124. The applicator base 122 can be used as a handle for the user to grasp when applying the desired cosmetic 101, and includes an opening 123 to receive a portion of the applicator tube 124. The applicator tube 124 includes a first end 124a, a second end 124b, a body 125 extending therebetween, and an applicator coupling mechanism 126. The applicator body 125 extends along a longitudinal axis "A". In the illustrated example, the applicator tube 124 is generally cylindrical in shape, although other configurations are possible. In the illustrated example, the first end 124a of the applicator tube 124 is angled obliquely relative to the longitudinal axis A, although other relative configurations are possible. Thus, in this configuration, the first end 124a of the applicator tube 124 defines a substantially planar oval surface.

The second end 124b of the applicator tube 124 can be inserted into the opening 123 of the applicator base 122 and can be fixed there by several methods, such as, for example, threaded connection, friction fit connection, use of protrusions and corresponding grooves, etc. Other examples are also possible. The main body 125 of the applicator tube 124 includes a flange section 125a, which is suitable for abutting the applicator base 122 when the second end 124b of the applicator tube 124 is inserted into the opening 123.

The applicator coupling mechanism 126 is positioned at the first end 124a of the applicator tube 124. The applicator coupling mechanism 126 is in the form of a raised track that extends outwardly from the first end 124a of the applicator tube 124 and around its peripheral edge. More specifically, the applicator coupling mechanism 126 includes a first end 126a positioned adjacent to a generally planar surface of the first end 124a of the applicator tube 124 and a second end 126b positioned distally from the first end 124a of the applicator tube 124. An inner side wall 128 is disposed between the first end 126a and the second end 126b. The second end 126b is defined by a generally planar surface that is parallel to the generally planar surface defined by the first end 124a of the applicator tube 124. The applicator coupling mechanism 126 also includes a stop surface 129. As seen in FIGS. 7 and 8, the applicator coupling mechanism 126 has a tapered cross-sectional shape, wherein the second end 126b of the applicator coupling mechanism has a larger width dimension than the first end 126a. In other words, the track of the applicator coupling mechanism 126 is generally trapezoidal in cross-sectional shape. Other cross-sectional shapes are also possible.

In some approaches, applicator coupling mechanism 126 may be integrally formed with applicator tube 124 . However, in other examples, applicator coupling mechanism 126 may be releasably secured with applicator tube 124 .

Turning to Figures 12-17, the product tray 140 is in the form of a body having a first side or lower side 140a, a second side or upper side 140b, a front portion 140c and a rear portion 140d. A through hole 142 extends through the product tray 140. In the illustrated example, each of the first side 140a and the second side 140b is generally planar and generally parallel to each other. However, other arrangements are also possible. The first side 140a of the product tray 140 includes a product receiving surface 144 and a raised outer edge 145 positioned around the periphery of the product receiving surface 144. With brief reference to Figures 4 and 18, the product receiving surface 144 is sized to receive a sample amount of the product 101 thereon. For example, the product receiving surface 144 can hold an amount of lipstick sufficient to satisfy between about two and about ten applications. Other examples of suitable amounts are possible. In the illustrated example, the product 101 protrudes outwardly from the product receiving surface 144 and forms an oval shape, but other arrangements are possible depending on the desired application style and/or styling.

The product tray 140 is dimensioned so that it can be positioned adjacent to and/or partially within the cavity 114 of the tray 110. More specifically, in some arrangements, the perimeter of the raised outer edge 145 can be dimensioned to be smaller than the perimeter dimension of the cavity 114 of the tray defined by the sidewall 112. Thus, at least a portion of the body of the product tray 140 can be positionable and/or nestable within the cavity 114 of the tray 110. The front portion 140c of the product tray 140 can be positioned adjacent to and/or adjacent to the front portion 112a of the sidewall 112, and the rear portion 140d of the product tray 140 can be positioned adjacent to and/or adjacent to the rear portion 112b of the sidewall 112.

In some examples, the tapered configuration of sidewalls 112 may serve as a physical restriction that prevents product tray 140 from being positioned further into cavity 114 of tray 110. Thus, when product tray 140 is at least partially positioned within cavity 114, a space or gap may be formed between product receiving surface 144 of product tray 140 and lower surface 113 of tray 110 that is large enough to retain product 101. Thus, product 101 may be safely positioned within cavity 114 without being damaged by sidewalls 112 and/or lower surface 113 of tray 110. In such an arrangement, the second side 140b of the product tray 140 may be positioned adjacent to the upper surface 111b of the supporting boss 111 and/or may extend upward from the upper surface 111b of the supporting boss 111.

As illustrated in Figure 4, through-hole 142 allows a portion of product 101 to be disposed therethrough, and/or may alternatively operate as a window or visual indicator that allows a user to determine when The appearance (eg, chroma, color, and/or other visual characteristics) of the product 101 disposed on the product receiving surface 144 of the product tray 140 when the product tray 140 is positioned within the cavity 114 of the tray 110 .

The second side 140b of the product tray 140 has a generally planar surface and includes a tray coupling mechanism 146 . Generally speaking, the disc coupling mechanism 146 is adapted to selectively engage the applicator coupling mechanism 126 of the applicator tube 124 . The disc coupling mechanism 146 is in the form of a raised platform or boss having a tapered outer side wall 148 and a stop surface 149 . As illustrated in Figures 4 and 15, the upper end 146a of the disk coupling mechanism 146 has wider dimensions than its lower end 146b. This arrangement is opposite to that of the applicator coupling mechanism 126 of the applicator tube 124 . Therefore, as illustrated in Figures 18 and 19, applicator 120 can apply The container coupling mechanism 126 is positioned adjacent the tray coupling mechanism 146 and slides the track toward a raised platform or boss to slidably engage the product tray 140. The inner side wall 128 of the applicator coupling mechanism 126 will be slidably positioned against the tapered outer side wall 148 of the disk coupling mechanism 146 such that movement of the product disk 140 in the longitudinal axis A is prevented. Instead, the generally planar surface of the second side 140b of the product disk 140 may slide along the generally planar surface of the first end 124a of the applicator tube 124.

In operation, any number of product trays 140 may be removably held within individual cavities 114 of the tray 110 , which in turn is disposed within respective openings 108 a of the dividers 108 disposed in the base 104 inside the internal cavity 104a. Each of these palettes may include products with different visual characteristics (e.g., different colors or shades, gloss levels (e.g., matte, satin, or clear), and/or may have different degrees of transfer resistance) 101 samples. The user can determine which product 101 sample they wish to apply by viewing the product 101 through the aperture 142 of the product tray 140 .

After selecting the desired product 101, the user can position the first end 124a of the applicator tube 124 near the rear portion 140d of the product tray 140 and move the applicator 120 in a generally planar direction parallel to the upper surface 111b of the support boss toward the front portion 140c of the product tray 140. As a result, the applicator coupling mechanism 126 (i.e., the inner side wall 128) engages with the tray coupling mechanism 146 (i.e., the tapered outer side wall 148). When the applicator tube 124 and the product tray 140 are fully aligned, the stop surface 129 of the applicator coupling mechanism 126 may abut the stop surface 149 of the tray coupling mechanism 146, and when fully aligned, continuing to push the applicator tube 124 toward the front portion 140c of the product tray 140 may cause the front portion 140c of the product tray 140 to contact the front portion 112a (and optionally, any stop mechanism disposed thereon), which may limit or stop the movement of the product tray 140 in a lateral direction. The user may then lift the applicator 120 from the tray 110, which in turn may cause the product tray 140 to be removed therefrom. The user may then apply a sample of the product 101 as desired.

In some examples, when product disk 140 and applicator 120 are fully coupled, a retaining mechanism may be engaged that secures product disk 140 and applicator 120 . For example, either or both stop surfaces 129 , 149 may include magnetic members that urge product disk 140 toward applicator 120 . In other examples, alternative or additional securing mechanisms may be used, such as detents, catches, tabs, or other protrusions. In any of these examples, the engagement between applicator 120 and product tray 140 may produce tactile feedback to alert the user that applicator 120 and product tray 140 are fully coupled together.

In some examples, the user may place cap 121 on applicator base 122 while product tray 140 is coupled to applicator 120 .

Product tray 140 may be disengaged from applicator 120 by positioning first side 140a within cavity 114 of tray 110 and away from product tray 140 in a generally planar direction parallel to upper surface 111b of support boss 111 The applicator 120 is moved (and, in examples where a retaining mechanism is provided, with sufficient force to overcome any retaining force resulting therefrom). This movement may cause the rear portion 140d of the product tray 140 to contact the rear portion 112b of the sidewall 112 of the tray 110 , which may act to retain the product tray 140 within the cavity 114 even as the applicator 120 continues to move away from the cavity 114 sports. After selectively disengaging the product disk 140 from the applicator 120, the user may engage a different product disk 140 with the applicator to apply the desired product 101, or may return the applicator to the applicator as desired. In other examples, when the user determines which full-size product they wish to purchase, the applicator tube 124 can be removed from the applicator base 122 and a replacement applicator (not shown) can be inserted into the applicator base 122 , which includes full-size quantities of product 101. In some examples, the product tray 140 may be reused and/or recycled when returned to the manufacturer, potentially reducing overall parts and manufacturing costs.

It will be appreciated that any number of modifications may be made to the system 100. For example, each of the applicator coupling mechanism 126 and the tray coupling mechanism 146 may have a reverse configuration whereby the applicator is inserted into a portion of the product tray. Other arrangements are also possible.

Claims (15)

A system for sample, trial, and/or full-size products, comprising: a container defining at least one cavity; a product tray having a first side, a second side, and between the first side and the second side. a body extending in between, the product pan positionable adjacent the at least one cavity; a cosmetic at least partially disposed on the first side of the product pan; and an applicator having a first end , the first end includes an applicator coupling mechanism; wherein the product tray is adapted to be removably coupled with the cavity of the container and the applicator coupling mechanism, wherein the product tray The first end of the applicator includes an angled surface, and the applicator coupling mechanism includes a raised track extending around a perimeter of the angled surface. The system of claim 1, wherein the body of the product tray includes a boss, and the applicator coupling mechanism includes a track adapted to slidably engage the boss of the body of the product tray. The system of claim 1, wherein said first side of said product tray is adapted to be disposed within said at least one cavity of said container. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one cavity includes a stop mechanism adapted to limit planar movement of the product tray. The system of claim 1, wherein the container further defines an applicator cavity adapted to hold at least a portion of the applicator. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one cavity of the container includes a retaining member suitable for retaining the product tray. The system of claim 6, wherein the retaining member comprises at least one of a magnetic member, a side wall, or a protrusion.
