Abstract

An apparatus, system, and method efficiently manage transmission power in a user equipment (UE) device by maintaining and applying an authorized power level to determine a transmission power level after a power limited transmission and before a new power control command has been received. The UE device maintains the authorized power level by monitoring and adjusting the authorized power level based on received power control commands. After a power limited transmission where the maximum power level is less than the authorized power level, the UE device determines the transmission power level for the next transmission based on the authorized power level. Accordingly, after the power limiting situation has ceased, the UE device transmits at the optimum power level eliminating the inefficiencies of transmitting at a lower than authorized power before the next power control command is received.

Description

Device system and method for managing transmission power in a wireless communication system

The present invention relates generally to communication systems and, more particularly, to an apparatus, system, and method for managing transmission power in a wireless communication system.

Wireless communication systems typically employ power control procedures to maximize the overall performance of the communication system. Power control procedures are particularly advantageous in systems that utilize coded multi-directional proximity (CDMA) technology because the signals transmitted by user equipment other than the target transmission source behave as noise from the receiver. Therefore, system performance can be improved if the transmission power of the user equipment is properly managed. In conventional wireless communication systems such as cellular and global mobile telecommunications service (UMTS) systems, the base station (Node B) periodically transmits power control information to the mobile station (user equipment) to indicate that the mobile station should increase Or reduce the transmission power. Generally, in a UMTS system, a base station is referred to as a Node B, and a mobile station is referred to as a User Equipment (UE). In addition to the power control commands, the actual transmit power of the UE device depends on the number of channels transmitted, the amount of data transmitted, and the maximum transmit power of the UE device.

A limitation of the conventional system is that, unless a power control command indicating that power should be changed is received, the transmission power level determined for a particular set of conditions is not adjusted when the condition changes. Since power control information is only periodically received, there may be situations where the UE device transmits data at a power level less than the optimal power level before receiving new power control information. In conventional systems, for example, if the UE device is limited by the maximum power limit and transmitted at a power lower than the licensed power of the Node B, the UE device scales the transmission power level of the channel to maintain the channel. The relative power between them does not exceed the maximum power limit. When the data rate or number of channels decreases, the transmission power level remains less than the authorized level before the new power control information is received. Therefore, the transmit power level of the UE device in the conventional system remains below the optimal level after the power limited transmission and before the new power control command is received.

Accordingly, what is needed is an apparatus, system, and method for managing transmission power in a wireless communication system.

An embodiment is a User Equipment (UE) device that maintains a privileged power level based on the received power control command and based on the privilege after the power limited transmission and before receiving a new power control command The power level determines the transmission power level of a signal to manage the transmission power. After the power limited transmission with the maximum power level being less than the licensed power level, the UE device determines the transmission power level of the next transmission based on the licensed power level.

Another embodiment is a program product for managing transmission power in a user equipment device (distributed computer system), the program product comprising computer executable instructions embodied on a computer readable medium and configured Performing the following computer execution steps: maintaining a licensed power level based on the received power control command; determining a transmission power of a signal based on the licensed power level after the power limited transmission and before receiving a new power control command Level.

Yet another embodiment is a user equipment device configured to communicate in a wireless communication system, the user equipment device comprising: a holding component for maintaining a licensed power level based on the received power control command; A determining component for determining a transmission power level of a signal based on the licensed power level after the power limited transmission and before receiving a new power control command.

An apparatus, system, and method for efficiently managing transmission power in a user equipment (UE) device by maintaining and applying a licensed power level after a power limited transmission and upon receiving a new power control Achieved by determining the transmission power level before the command. The UE device maintains the licensed power level by monitoring and adjusting the licensed power level based on the received power control commands, transmission data rates, and channel configuration changes. After the power limited transmission with the maximum power level being less than the licensed power level, the UE device determines the transmission power level of the next transmission based on the licensed power level. Therefore, after the power limiting condition is stopped, the UE device transmits at the optimal power level before receiving the next power control command to eliminate the inefficiency caused by power transmission below the licensed power.

1 is a block diagram of a User Equipment (UE) device 100 in communication with a Node B 102 of a wireless communication system in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention. The functional blocks shown in Figure 1 can be implemented by any combination of hardware, software, and/or firmware. Any of the functions performed by a single block may be performed by multiple devices or systems, and in some cases, the functionality of more than one block may be performed by a single device. For example, in some cases, controller 108 may perform the functions of a receiver and a transmitter.

BTS。In an exemplary embodiment, UE device 100 communicates with one or more Node Bs 102 in accordance with the UMTS standard. The transmission power management techniques discussed herein can be used in any of a large number of communication systems. The UE device 100 can be a mobile station, a mobile unit, a cellular telephone, a wireless PDA, or any other portable communication device. In addition, those skilled in the art should recognize that Node B is a base station in a UMTS system, and the function of Node B can be applied to any type of base station or BTS utilizing power control in a communication system.

The controller 108 in the UE device 100 controls the transmitter 104 and the receiver 106 and performs other functions including managing the overall functionality of the UE device 100. Controller 108 is any combination of processor, microprocessor, processor configuration, computer, logic gate, special application integrated circuit (ASIC), programmable logic circuit, and/or computing circuit. The software running on controller 108 performs the functions described herein as well as computational and other device management and communication tasks.

Receiver 106 receives the power control signal from Node B 102 during operation. In an exemplary embodiment, the power control signal is a Transmission Power Control (TPC) signal indicating whether the UE device 100 should increase or decrease the transmission power relative to the last UE transmission. It is known that the power control information in the UMTS system indicates the privileged transmission power level (PAU), which indicates the total privileged transmission power of the signal when applied to the transmission data rate of the signal. The UE device 100 determines an appropriate transmission power level based on the total amount of data to be transmitted. As the data rate increases, the total transmission power also increases. Thus, if the transmission channel is increased, then when all other factors remain constant, the licensor UE device 100 transmits at a higher power level than when there is no additional channel. The licensed power level (PAU) is sometimes referred to as the desired power.

However, in addition to the power control commands, the actual transmit power (PTRANS) of the signals transmitted from the UE device 100 also meets other constraints. The transmit power level of the signal must be greater than or equal to the minimum power level (PMIN) and less than or equal to the maximum power level (PMAX) (eg, PMIN) PTRANS PMAX). The maximum power is typically the lesser of the power level specified by the class parameter of the UE device 100 and the power cap established and transmitted by the network. The network establishes a power cap by optimizing the communication capacity of each UE device service by a particular unit. The minimum power is typically determined by a particular communication standard, but the minimum power can vary between UE devices 100. An example of the minimum power level required for a communication standard is -50 dBm. As discussed above, when the power control command indicates that the UE device 100 is transmitting beyond these limits, there may be ambiguities and inefficiencies in the conventional system. Specifically, if the power control indicates that the UE device 100 should transmit at a licensed power level greater than the maximum power level, the UE device 100 limits the transmission power of some transmission data rates or adjusts the transmission power level of the channel to comply with Maximum power limit. When the power limited condition is stopped, such as when the transmission data rate of the next UE transmission is reduced or the additional channel is no longer used, the conventional UE device determines the power level based on the scaled power, and is smaller than the Node B 102 Power level transfer of licensed power. Conventional UE devices continue to transmit at a power level below the optimal transmission power level until Node B 102 uses the power control commands to adjust the transmission power.

According to an exemplary embodiment, the UE device 100 maintains the licensed power level by monitoring and adjusting the licensed power level in accordance with the power control commands. When the transmission power is limited by the maximum power, the UE device 100 applies a licensed power level to determine the transmission power of the next transmission. Thus, the UE device 100 tracks the granted power level and does not continue to limit the transmission power according to the power limited transmission as in the conventional system. The transmission power of the unconstrained signal transmitted after the power limited condition is stopped is not dependent on the previous power limited transmission of the power limited signal.

A value indicative of the licensed power level is stored in memory 110, which may include any combination of volatile or non-volatile memory devices. For example, the memory can include a random access memory (RAM) device. The software running on the controller 108 applies the criteria to maintain the privileged transmission power level stored as a value in the memory 110 of the exemplary embodiment.

Accordingly, controller 108 is configured to maintain a licensed power level associated with the transmission data rate and based on the power control commands. The controller 108 is further configured to determine the transmit power level of the signal based on the licensed power level after the power limited state is stopped and before the new power control command is received. The receiver 106 is configured to receive a power control command, and the transmitter 104 is configured to transmit a power limited signal and then transmit the unconstrained signal at a licensed power level after the power limited condition is stopped.

The method and apparatus of the present invention can be at least partially employed in the form of program logic or code (i.e., instructions) embodied in a tangible medium, such as a floppy disk, CD-ROM, hard disk. Machine, random access or read-only memory or any other machine-readable storage medium. When the code is loaded into and executed by a machine, such as a computer or processor within the UE device 100, the machine becomes a device for practicing the present invention. The method and apparatus of the present invention may also be embodied in the form of a code transmitted over an optical fiber, a radio frequency link, or by any other form of transmission on some transmission medium such as a wire or cable. When a code is received and loaded into and executed by a machine, such as a computer, processor or controller 108 within UE device 100, the machine becomes a device for practicing the present invention. When implemented on a general purpose processor, the code is combined with the processor to provide a unique means of operation similar to the particular logic circuit.

2 is a flow chart of a method of transmitting power management in a UE device 100 in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention. The method can be performed by any combination of hardware, firmware and/or software. In an exemplary embodiment, the method is performed by running a software code on controller 108 using memory 110, transmitter 104, receiver 106, and other devices in UE device 100. In some cases, the order of the steps described with reference to Figures 2 and 3 may vary.

At step 202, the UE device 100 maintains a licensed power level. The controller 108 interprets the power control commands transmitted by the Node B 102 and received by the receiver 106 to adjust the licensed power level. In an exemplary embodiment, the receiver 106 receives a TPC command according to the UMTS standard indicating whether the licensed power should be increased or decreased. A value indicating the licensed power level is stored in the memory and updated as needed. Thus, the UE device 100 monitors and adjusts the licensed power level based on the power control commands. An exemplary method of performing step 202 will be discussed in further detail below with reference to FIG.

214。At step 204, the transmit power level of the signal is determined based on the licensed power level. In addition to the criteria to be discussed immediately below and the selected data rate of the signal to be transmitted, in some cases other rules and criteria can be used to determine the licensed power level of the signal. Step 204 includes steps 208 through 214.

202。At step 206, a signal is transmitted from the UE device 100 at a transmission power (PTX). In an exemplary embodiment, the transmission power (PTX) is determined based on the transmission data rate and the number of channels based on the transmission mechanism and the criteria used in steps 208-214. Thus, in an exemplary embodiment, the power management method applies a licensed power level to transmit an unconstrained signal after transmitting a power limited signal and before receiving a new power control command. After transmitting the signal, the program returns to step 202.

212。Steps 208 through 216 provide an exemplary method of performing step 204. At step 208, it is determined if the licensed power level is less than or equal to the minimum power level (PMIN) of the UE device 100. If the licensed power is less than or equal to the minimum power level (PMIN), the transmit power (PTX) is set equal to the minimum power at step 210, and then the process proceeds to step 206. Otherwise, the process proceeds to step 212.

206。At step 212, it is determined if the maximum power is less than or equal to the licensed power level (PAU). If the maximum power is less than or equal to the licensed power level, the transmit power level is set equal to the maximum power level in step 214, and then the process proceeds to step 206. Otherwise, the transmission power is set equal to the licensed power at step 216, and then the process proceeds to step 206.

3 is a flow diagram of maintaining a licensed power level in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention. Steps 302 through 320 provide an exemplary method for performing step 202 of FIG. The method can be performed by any combination of hardware, firmware and/or software. In an exemplary embodiment, the method is performed by running a software code on controller 108 using memory 110, transmitter 104, receiver 106, and other devices in UE device 100.

306。At step 302, it is determined if the maximum power level is less than the licensed power level. If the maximum power level is not less than the licensed power level, then the program proceeds to step 304 where the program returns to step 204. Otherwise, the program proceeds to step 306.

308。At step 306, a determination is made as to whether a data rate change or channel change has occurred since the last transmission. In an exemplary embodiment, the data rate change is indicated by a change in Transport Format Combination Indicator (TFCI) transmitted in an uplink transmission in accordance with the UMTS standard. The change in physical channel combination is detected by time aligning different uplink physical channels, such as DPDCH and HSDPCCH, and determining when any of them are turned on, off, or a change in expected transmission power occurs. If no change occurs, the program proceeds to step 310. Otherwise, the process proceeds to step 308.

At step 308, the previous licensed power level (PAU[N-1]) is adjusted based on the channel change or data change to generate the current licensed power level (PAU[N]). When a data rate change occurs in an exemplary embodiment, the current licensed power is the previous licensed power plus the delta power (dB), where the delta power is transmitted by TFCI [N-1] and TFCI [N]. Under the same power constraints on the DPCCH, the DPDCH and DPCCH power scaling factors of the new TFCI [N] are compared with the DPDCH and DPCCH power scaling factors of the previous TFCI [N-1].

312。At step 310, it is determined whether new power control information has been received since the last transmission. If no new power control information is received, the program returns to step 204. Otherwise, the program proceeds to step 312.

316。At step 312, it is determined whether the previous licensed power level is between the maximum and minimum limits (PMIN PAU[N-1] PMAX). In the exemplary embodiment, the maximum and minimum power limits are known in advance, depending on the UE class and network signal value. These parameters are configured in the UE during an initial signal exchange operation between the UE and the Node B. If the previous licensed power level is between the power limits, the process proceeds to step 314. Otherwise, the program proceeds to step 316.

204。At step 314, a new power control command is applied to adjust the privileged power level and the current privileged power level is generated, and then proceeds to step 204.

320。At step 316, it is determined if the previous licensed power level is greater than the maximum licensed power and the TPC command is equal to "UP". If the condition is met, the current licensed power level is set equal to the previous licensed power level, and the process proceeds to step 304. Otherwise, the program proceeds to step 320.

204。At step 320, it is determined whether the previous licensed power level is less than the minimum authorized power and whether the TPC command is equal to "DOWN". If the condition is met, the current licensed power level is set equal to the previous licensed power level, and the process proceeds to step 204. Otherwise, the program proceeds to step 204.

When the exemplary steps described with reference to FIGS. 2 and 3 are continuously performed in the exemplary embodiment, the case where the power-limited transmission is unconstrained is managed by transmitting the unconstrained signal at the licensed power level.

4 is a graphical illustration of a comparison between transmission power levels of a prior art system and an exemplary UE device in accordance with the first example. The illustration includes representations of the granted transmission power 404, the conventional transmission power 406, and the UE device transmission power 408 for the three frames 401, 402, 403 in the first transmission instance. This scheme is feasible when there are speech encoded data (AMR-adaptive multi-rate) transmitted in frames 1, 2 and 3 (401, 402, 403). If there is only one additional signal message transmitted on the DPDCH in the frame 2 as shown in FIG. 4, the frame 3 shows how the system quickly returns to the frame 1 using the adaptive licensed power implementation according to the exemplary embodiment. Steady state power level. Therefore, the increase in the error rate of voice traffic caused by the limited transmission power will be limited to frame 2. In the non-adaptive licensed power embodiment, the error rate will increase over a much longer period of time, including frame 2, frame 3, and until the power control command forces the power to rise. This is not particularly desirable because of the high symbol detection error implicit in the communication power control commands.

404。Each transmit power representation 404, 406, 408 includes a DPCCH portion 410 and a DPDCH portion 412. The maximum power 414 of the UE device is represented by a horizontal line having a power value of 15, and the minimum power level 416 is depicted as a horizontal line at 1. In the first frame 401, the licensed power level 404, the conventional transmission power level 406, and the UE transmission power level 408 are all similar to the maximum power level 414. For the first example, TFCI #0 (BetaC = BetaD = 15) to provide a total transmission power 404, 406, 408 of PMAX - 0.3 dB in the first frame 401. In the second frame 402, the licensed power is greater than the maximum power. In the second frame 402, TFCI #1 (BetaC=7, BetaD=15). Therefore, the data rate in the second frame 402 is greater than the data rate in the first frame 401, thereby generating a licensed power that is 4.46 dB higher than the licensed power in the first frame 401. Both conventional transmit power 406 and UE device transmit power 408 are limited to maximum power 414, and both DPCCH portion 410 and DPDCH portion 412 are reduced to comply with power limit 414. In the third frame 403 in the first example, the UE device transmits again under TFCI #0. The conventional power 406 in the third frame 403 is lower than the maximum power 414, even though the licensed power 404 allows transmission at a higher level. The power control in the conventional system is strongly adjusted in the second frame 402, and no correction is made in the third frame 403. Therefore, the conventional transmission power 406 in the third frame 403 is based on the transmission 406 in the previous frame 402 instead of the licensed power 404. However, the transmit power level 408 of the exemplary UE device is returned to the licensed power level 404.

5 is a graphical illustration of a comparison between transmission power levels 508, 510 of a conventional example system and an exemplary UE device in accordance with a second example. The illustration includes representations of the licensed transmission power 506, the conventional transmission power 508, and the UE device transmission power 510 of the five time slots 501, 502, 503, 504, 505 of the second transmission example.

In the first time slot 501 and the second time slot 502, the transmission signal includes only the DPDCH portion 412 and the DPCCH portion 410. In the third time slot 503 and the fourth time slot 504, the addition of the HSDPCCH channel produces an HSDPCCH portion 512 and a licensed power level 506 that is greater than the maximum power level 414 of the UE device. The power of each of the portions 410, 412, 512 is reduced to maintain the transmission power level less than the maximum power level 414. In the fifth time slot 505, the HSDPCCH channel is not used and the licensed power level 506 returns to a value less than the maximum power level 414. The conventional transmission power 508 is less than the licensed power level 506 because no adjustments are made after the channel powers 410, 412, 512 in the third time slot 503 and the fourth time slot 504 are scaled. However, the UE device operating in accordance with an exemplary embodiment transmits the signal at the licensed power level 510 in the fifth time slot 505.

6 is a block diagram of a system for managing power control in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present invention. The blocks shown in Figure 6 represent functions that can be implemented in any combination of software, hardware, and/or firmware. Any of the functions performed by a single block may be performed by multiple devices or systems, and in some cases, the functionality of more than one block may be performed by a single device. An example of a suitable implementation of a functional block includes executing a software code on controller 108.

The licensed power holder 602 maintains the licensed power level. Thus, the licensed power holder 602 monitors and adjusts the licensed power level based on the power control commands. An exemplary method of performing step 202 will be discussed in greater detail below with respect to FIG.

608、612、614。The transmit power level determiner 604 determines the transmit power level of the signal based on the licensed power level. The transmit power level determiner 604 includes a minimum power analyzer 606, a maximum power analyzer 610, and three power setters 608, 612, 614.

Transmitter 104 transmits the signal from UE device 100 at a transmission power (PTX). In an exemplary embodiment, transmission power (PTX) is determined based on a transmission mechanism and criteria used by blocks 606-614 based on the transmission data rate and the number of channels. Thus, in an exemplary embodiment, the power management method applies a licensed power level to transmit an unconstrained signal after transmitting a power limited signal and before receiving a new power control command. After transmitting the signal, the keeper 602 continues to maintain the privileged power level.

The minimum power analyzer 606 analyzes the minimum power (PMIN) to determine if the licensed power level is less than or equal to the minimum power level (PMIN) of the UE device 100. If the licensed power is less than or equal to the minimum power level (PMIN), the transmit power (PTX) is set equal to the minimum power by the power setter 608. Otherwise, the maximum power analyzer 610 determines if the maximum power is less than or equal to the licensed power level (PAU). If the maximum power is less than or equal to the licensed power level, the power level is set by the power setter 612 to be equal to the maximum power level. Otherwise, the transmission power is set equal to the licensed power by the power setter 614.

7 is a block diagram of an exemplary functional implementation of one of the licensed power holders 602. The blocks shown in Figure 7 represent functions that can be implemented in any combination of software, hardware, and/or firmware. Any of the functions performed by a single block may be performed by multiple devices or systems, and in some cases, the functionality of more than one block may be performed by a single device. An example of a suitable implementation of a functional block includes executing a software code on controller 108.

(PAU[N])。The maximum power analyzer 702 determines if the maximum power level is less than the licensed power level. If the maximum power level is not less than the licensed power level, the power level determiner 604 determines the transmission power level. Otherwise, data rate analyzer 704 determines if a data rate change or channel change has occurred since the last transmission. If a change occurs, the power setter 706 sets the current licensed power level based on the previous licensed power level (PAU[N-1]) and the power level change associated with the rate change or data change (PAU[N ]).

The power control analyzer determines if new power control information has been received since the last transmission. If no new power control information is received, the transmit power level determiner 604 determines the transmit power level.

If no new power control command is received, the licensed power analyzer 710 determines whether the previous licensed power level is between the maximum and minimum limits (PMIN PAU[N-1] PMAX). If the previous licensed power level is between the power limits, the power setter 712 sets the licensed power level based on the power control command.

DOWN"。If the previous power level is greater than the maximum power level, the TPC analyzer 714 determines if the power control command is equal to "UP." If the previous licensed power level is less than the minimum licensed power, the TPC analyzer 718 determines if the TPC is equal to "DOWN."

If the previous power level is greater than the maximum power level and the TPC is equal to "UP", or if the previous licensed power level is less than the minimum licensed power and the TPC command is equal to "DOWN", the power setter 716 will present the current licensed power level. Set to the previous licensed power level.

Thus, in the exemplary embodiment, UE device 100 maintains the privileged power level by monitoring and adjusting the privileged power level based on the TPC commands received by receiver 106. After transmitting the power limited state of a signal at a power less than the licensed power, if the licensed power is less than or equal to the maximum power, the UE device 100 transmits the next signal at the licensed power.
