A parallel variable length decoder for decoding variable length codeword with sign bit comprises of: one barrel shifter for receiving original variable length code wordwith sign bit, and outputting one fixed length bit stream which consistsof every bit of signed variable length code word and sign bit of signedvariable length code word; one memory unit for receiving the signed variable length code word, anddecoding bit of the signed variable length code word except the sign bit,becoming total length of signed variable length code word with at leastone unsigned level and one sign symbol; one mask circuit for receiving the signed variable length code word formbarrel shifter and the total length from memory unit, and outputting oneunsigned sign bit.
