Abstract
The present invention provides a thiocarbonylthio compound used in free radical polymerization and represented by the formula (I): wherein when R is CR1R2SO2R3, Z is independently perfluoroalkyl, alkyl, haloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, haloalkylaryl, arylalkyl, aminoalkyl, alkylamino, alkoxy, alkoxyaryl, (R')2P(=O) or (R')2P(=S); wherein R1, R2 and R3 is independently alkyl, aryl, aminoalkyl, alkylamino, alkoxy or alkoxyaryl: R' is independently alkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, arylalkyl, alkoxy or alkoxyaryl ; and when R is independently alkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, arylalkyl, aminoalkyl, alkylamino, alkoxy, alkylsilyl alkylsulfide or substituent containing CN, COOR4 or heterocyclic moieties, Z is perfluoroalkyl, wherin R4 is H or methyl. The thiocarbonylthio compound can be used as a reversible chain transfer agent in a free radical polymerization to obtain a polymer with a predetermined molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution.
