Description

TR TR TR TR TR TR TR TR TR TR TRDESCRIPTION OF AEROSOL-GENERATING OBJECT CONTAINING MAGNETIC PARTICLES The present invention relates to an aerosol-generating object for use in an electrically heated aerosol generator system, which contains magnetic particles comprising a magnetic material with a Curie temperature between approximately 60 degrees Celsius and approximately 200 degrees Celsius. The present invention also relates to an electrically heated aerosol generator device for obtaining the aerosol-generating object, which includes an inductor and a heating element controlled by a measured inductance of the inductor. The present invention also relates to a method of operating the device together with the aerosol-generating object and describes electrically operated aerosol generator smoking systems with a number of advantages. One advantage of such e-cigarette systems is that they significantly reduce sidestream smoke while allowing the user to stop and restart smoking at their discretion. Document WO 99/20940 A1 describes a cigarette identification system comprising a coil that receives the lighter's input socket at a location along the cigarette, an oscillation circuit communicating with the coil, and a control unit configured to activate or deactivate the lighter in accordance with the output of the oscillator circuit. Electrically heated cigarette systems typically include a power source, such as a battery, connected to a heater to heat the aerosol-forming substrate, which is then used to produce the aerosol supplied to the smoker. During operation, these electrically heated cigarette systems typically deliver a high pulse of power to the heater to maintain the desired temperature range for operation and release of volatile compounds. Electrically heated cigarette systems may be reusable and can be configured to dispense a disposable cigarette containing an aerosolizing substrate to create the aerosol. Aerosol dispensers developed for electrically heated cigarette systems are specifically designed for this purpose, as the flavors are produced and released through controlled heating of the aerosolizing substrate without the combustion that occurs in conventional cigarettes and other cigarettes. Therefore, the composition of a cigarette designed for an electrically heated cigarette system may differ from that of a conventional cigarette. Using a lit-tip cigarette lighter with an electrically heated cigarette system can result in a poor smoking experience for the user and may also damage the system because, for example, the cigarette lighter is incompatible with the system. Additionally, there may be many different cigarette lighters configured for use with the system, each providing a different smoking experience for the user. Some cigarette lighters in the previous technique contain a sensor that can detect the presence of a cigarette lighter within the system. Conventional systems print identifiable ink onto the surface of the cigarette lighter, which is then detected by the electrically heated cigarette lighter. The aim of the present invention is to provide an electrically heated aerosol generator device that incorporates a sensor, offering enhanced functionality to the user and making it more difficult to produce counterfeit products. Accordingly, the present invention provides an aerosol-generating object for use in an electrically heated aerosol generator; this aerosol-generating object consists of a mouthpiece, an aerosol-generating substrate, and several magnetic particles contained in a magnetic material with a Curie temperature between approximately 60 degrees Celsius and approximately 200 degrees Celsius. The term "aerosol-generating object" is used to refer to an object containing a substrate. As those familiar with the field will know, an aerosol is a suspension of solid particles or liquid droplets in a gas such as air. An aerosol can be a suspension of solid particles and liquid droplets in a gas such as air. By supplying numerous magnetic particles on or within the aerosol-generating object, objects formed in accordance with the present invention are usefully provided with a unique means for detecting the presence of the object in an electrically heated aerosol generator. Specifically, in practice, the aerosol-generating object is received within an electrically heated aerosol generator containing a means for detecting the presence of magnetic particles. As explained in more detail below, the means for detecting the presence of magnetic particles preferably includes an inductor supplied within the device. Usefully generating magnetic particles from a magnetic material with a Curie temperature between approximately 60 degrees Celsius and approximately 200 degrees Celsius can add an additional element to the detection of aerosol-generating objects by the electrically heated aerosol generator. For example, the device can first detect the presence of an aerosol-generating object intended for use with the device by sensing the presence of magnetic particles within the object. Following the initial heating of the aerosol-generating object, the device can then detect a temperature at which the properties of the magnetic particles change, indicating the Curie temperature of the magnetic material that generates the magnetic particles. Based on the Curie temperature, the device can then perform an additional action, such as applying a specific heating profile depending on the type of aerosol-generating object detected. Therefore, preferably, the magnetic particles contain magnetic material with a Curie temperature that falls within the operating temperature of the electric heater inside the electrically heated aerosol generator. The magnetic particles may contain a magnetic material with a Curie temperature of at least approximately 70 degrees Celsius, preferably at least approximately 80 degrees Celsius. Alternatively, the magnetic particles may contain a magnetic material with a Curie temperature lower than approximately 140 degrees Celsius, preferably lower than approximately 130 degrees Celsius. The invention preferably provides two or more magnetic particles for use in the aerosol-generating object, with each type of magnetic particle having a different Curie temperature. In this way, many aerosol-generating objects can be provided; Each of these possesses a different type of magnetic particle, enabling the aerosol-generating device to differentiate and operate accordingly between aerosol-generating objects based on their perceived Curie temperature. Additionally, or alternatively, the invention can provide multiple aerosol-generating objects, each containing a different amount of magnetic particles; thus, the aerosol-generating device can differentiate and operate accordingly between different types of aerosol-generating objects based on the amount of magnetic particles detected. Magnetic particles can be incorporated into any aerosol-generating object component, including but not limited to paper such as wrapping paper; filters; filter papers; tobacco; tobacco wrappers; coatings; binders; retainers; glues; inks; foams; hollow acetate tubes; wraps and natural varnishes. Magnetic particles can be incorporated into the component either by adding them to a paper pulp or paste before drying, or by painting or spraying them onto the component. In some configurations, the inclusion of magnetic particles in the aerosol-generating substrate is preferable, especially when the aerosol-generating object is used with an electrically heated aerosol generator containing a heater and an inductor embedded in the aerosol-generating substrate during use. The inclusion of magnetic particles in the aerosol-generating substrate also prevents the particles from shifting during manufacturing and subsequent use by the consumer. Preferably, the magnetic particles should be distributed throughout the aerosol-generating substrate; In this way, the orientation of the aerosol-generating object within the aerosol generator device is not important. This allows the system to be simpler for the user. In a particularly preferred configuration, the magnetic particles are largely homogeneously distributed throughout the aerosol-generating substrate. Magnetic particles are present in an amount that is preferably between approximately 1% and approximately 30% by weight of the aerosol-generating substrate, even more preferably between approximately 1% and approximately 10% by weight of the aerosol-generating substrate, and most preferably between approximately 1% and approximately 5% by weight of the aerosol-generating substrate. Providing a certain number of magnetic particles within these ranges ensures that they are present in sufficient numbers to allow for their effective detection by the electrically heated aerosol generator during use. The numerical average diameter of the magnetic particles is preferably between approximately 25 micrometers and approximately 75 micrometers. Particle sizes within this range allow for their incorporation into the aerosol-generating object with minimal modification to the existing manufacturing processes. For example, in formulations where the aerosol-generating substrate contains tobacco wrapped in cigarette paper, magnetic particles can be added to the tobacco during its maturation and processing before it is wrapped to form a separate aerosol-generating object. In configurations where the aerosol-generating substrate contains tobacco in the form of cast leaf sheets, magnetic particles with a diameter of less than approximately 75 micrometers can be incorporated into the cast leaf sheets without requiring an increase in the typical thickness of these sheets. Using magnetic particles with a diameter of at least approximately 25 micrometers can prevent the transfer of magnetic particles from the aerosol-generating substrate to other parts of the aerosol-generating object or to the consumer during use. Suitable magnetic materials for generating magnetic particles include ferrites, iron alloys, and nickel alloys. The aerosol-generating object may consist of a coaxially aligned aerosol-generating substrate surrounded by an outer coil, a hollow tube-shaped element, an aerosol cooling element, and a mouthpiece. The aerosol-generating object contains an outer casing, which could be, for example, a cigarette paper outer casing. The aerosol-generating object can be approximately 30 mm to approximately 120 mm in length, for example, approximately 45 mm in length. The aerosol-generating object can be approximately 4 mm to approximately 15 mm in diameter, for example, approximately 7.2 mm in diameter. The aerosol-generating substrate can be approximately 3 mm to approximately 30 mm in length. As described above, the aerosol-generating object contains an aerosol-generating substrate. The aerosol-generating substrate preferably contains a tobacco-containing material with volatile tobacco flavor components released from the substrate upon heating. Alternatively, it may contain a non-tobacco material, such as those used in aerosols. The aerosol-generating substrate preferably also contains an aerosol generator. Examples of suitable aerosol generators are glycerin and propylene glycol. Additional examples of potentially suitable aerosol generators are described in documents EP-A-O 277 519 and US-A-5 396 911. The aerosol generator substrate may be a solid substrate. The solid substrate may contain, for example, one or more leaves containing powder, granules, lumps, particles, long thin threads, strips, and one or more homogenized tobacco such as plant leaves, tobacco leaves, broken pieces of tobacco leaf veins, moistened tobacco, dried tobacco, and puffed tobacco. Optionally, the solid substrate may contain additional tobacco or non-tobacco volatile flavor compounds to be released upon heating of the substrate. Optionally, the solid substrate may be supplied on or embedded in a thermally stable carrier. The carrier may be a powder, granules, lumps, particles, long thin threads, or a tubular carrier with a solid substrate on its surface or as a thin layer on both its inner and outer surfaces. Such a tubular carrier may consist of, for example, a paper or paper-like material, a non-woven carbon fiber mat, a low-mass open-weave metallic screen or perforated metallic foil, or any other thermally stable polymer matrix. The solid substrate may be layered on the surface of the carrier, for example, in the form of a sheet, foam, gel, or slurry. The solid substrate carrier may be layered over the entire surface or, alternatively, layered within a template to provide irregular flavor delivery during use. Alternatively, this carrier may be a nonwoven fabric or a fiber bundle incorporating tobacco components, as described in document EP-A-O 857 431. The nonwoven fabric or fiber bundle may contain, for example, carbon fibers, natural cellulose fibers, or cellulose-derived fibers. The aerosol-generating substrate may be a liquid substrate, and the smoking product may include devices to hold the liquid substrate. For example, the smoking product may include a reservoir, as described in document EP-A-O 893 071. Alternatively, or in addition, the smoking product may include a carrier material. The aerosol-generating substrate can alternatively be any other type of substrate, for example, a gaseous substrate or any combination of various substrate types. Magnetic particles can be incorporated, for example, into the material forming the reservoir for holding the liquid substrate, as well as into the device for holding the liquid substrate. Alternatively, or in addition, where available, magnetic particles can be incorporated into a porous carrier material. The aerosol-generating object is preferably a cigarette smoking product. Alternatively, the present invention provides an electrically heated aerosol generator device for taking up an aerosol-generating object containing a magnetic material; the device includes a heater and an inductor to heat the aerosol-generating object. The device also includes a control unit to repeatedly measure the inductance of the inductor and the temperature of the heating element; The control unit controls the supply of electrical current to the heating element in relation to the measured inductance to provide a predetermined heating profile. According to the useful invention, the aerosol generator device can detect the presence of magnetic material in an aerosol-generating object placed inside the device and control the electrical current to the heating element accordingly. Specifically, by detecting changes in the inductor's inductance as a result of magnetic material in the aerosol-generating object placed near the inductor, the control unit can determine that an aerosol-generating object intended for use with the device has been placed inside. This also includes changing the wavelength and frequency of the current supply. For example, upon detecting the presence of magnetic material, such as the magnetic particles in the aerosol-generating objects described above, the control unit can activate a supply of electrical current to the heating element to begin heating the aerosol-generating object. As described above, the control unit can be configured to differentiate between different types of aerosol-generating objects. For example, based on the measured inductance of the inductor when an aerosol-generating object is placed, the control unit can determine the amount of magnetic material present and thus the type of aerosol-generating object. Additionally, or alternatively, by repeatedly measuring the inductance of the inductor during the heating of the aerosol-generating object, the control unit can determine the temperature at which a significant change in inductance occurs; This is an indication of the Curie temperature of the magnetic material in the aerosol-generating object. Based on the determined Curie temperature, the control unit can identify the type of aerosol-generating object. In response to identifying the type of aerosol-generating object, the control unit can appropriately change the wavelength and frequency of the electrical current supply to the heating element. For example, based on the type of aerosol-generating object, the control unit can change the wavelength and frequency of the current to provide a specific heating profile suitable for the type of aerosol-generating object. Resistive materials include, but are not limited to, semiconductors such as doped ceramics, electrically conductive ceramics (such as molybdenum disilide), carbon, graphite, metals, metal alloys, and composite materials made from ceramic and metallic materials. These types of composite materials may include ceramics with or without reinforcement. Examples of suitable reinforced ceramics include reinforced silicon carbides. Examples of suitable metals include titanium, zirconium, and metals from the platinum group. Examples of suitable metal alloys include stainless steel, nickel-, cobalt-, chromium-, aluminum-, titanium-, zirconium-, hafnium-, niobium-, molybdenum-, tantalum-, tungsten-, tin-, gallium-, manganese-, and iron-containing alloys, as well as nickel, iron, cobalt, stainless steel, Timetal®-based superalloys, and iron-manganese-aluminum based alloys. In composite materials, an electrically resistive material can be placed, enveloped, or coated within an insulating material, or vice versa, depending on the kinetics of energy transfer and the required external physicochemical properties. Suitable composite heating elements may take the form of US-A-5. Alternatively, the heating element may take the form of an electrically resistive metallic tube as described in document EP-A-1 128 741. Alternatively, one or more heating pins or rods passing through the center of the substrate may also be suitable. Alternatively, the heating element may be a disc (tip) heater or a combination of a disc heater and heating pins or rods. Other alternatives include a heating wire or filament such as Ni-Cr, platinum, tungsten or alloy wire, or a heating plate, as described in document EP-A-1 736 065, which may be in at least partial contact with the substrate or the carrier on which the substrate is deposited. Alternatively, heat can be transferred from the heating element to the substrate via a heat conductor element. Alternatively, the heating element can transfer heat to the incoming ambient air drawn through the electrically heated aerosol generator device during use, thus heating the aerosol before it passes through the aerosol-generating substrate as described. The inductor may contain a conductive coil connected to the control unit to allow the control unit to measure the inductance of the inductor. The inductor is preferably positioned within the device so that the magnetic material in the object generating the aerosol can be positioned near the inductor when the object is placed inside the device. Preferably, the device contains a conductive coil that functions as both a heating element and an inductor. For example, the device may include a heating blade containing a conductive coil embedded in an electrically insulating substrate; The conductive coil within the device functions as both an inductor and a resistive heating element. Constructing the heating element and inductor from a single conductive coil is cost-effective and simplifies the manufacturing and construction of the device. In configurations where the device contains a single conductive coil that functions as both a heating element and a conductor, the control unit is preferably configured to send a pulsed supply of electrical current through the conductive coil to heat the aerosol-generating object and measure the inductance of the conductive coil between current pulses. The control unit may be configured to send the electrical current through the conductive coil in pulses at a frequency between approximately 1 MHz and approximately 30 MHz, preferably between approximately 1 MHz and approximately 10 MHz, and even more preferably between approximately 5 MHz and approximately 7 MHz. Alternatively, the present invention provides an electrically heated aerosol generator system comprising an aerosol-generating object suitable for any configuration described above, together with an electrically heated aerosol generator device suitable for any configuration described above. Yet another approach provides a method for operating an electrically heated aerosol generator system; the system comprises several magnetic particles, a heating element to heat the aerosol-generating object, an inductor, and a control unit configured to measure the inductance of the inductor and control the supply of electrical current to the heating element. The method involves steps to measure the inductance of the inductor and compare the measured inductance with one or more predetermined values of inductance. The supply of electric current to the heating element is controlled based on comparing the measured inductance with one or more predetermined inductance values; the step of controlling the supply of electric current to the heating element involves activating the current supply to the heating element to heat the aerosol-generating object to a temperature above the Curie temperature of many magnetic particles; the method also includes the steps of repeatedly measuring the inductance of the inductor and the temperature of the heating element during the heating of the aerosol-generating object; determining when a drop in the measured inductance occurs during the heating of the aerosol-generating object; the drop in inductance indicates that many magnetic particles have been heated to the Curie temperature; This includes a step to modify the current supplied to the heating element to provide a predetermined heating profile; this predetermined heating profile is selected based on at least one of two factors: the time at which the measured inductance drop occurs and the temperature of the heating element at which the measured inductance drop occurs. For example, if the measured inductance corresponds to a basic inductance, the control unit may assume either that there are no aerosol-generating objects in the device or that any installed aerosol-generating object does not contain magnetic material and is therefore not intended for use with the device. Under these conditions, the control unit can be configured to block the supply of electrical current to the heating element. That is, the control unit will not activate the heating element. Therefore, the step of controlling the supply of electrical current to the heating element should preferably involve not supplying current to the heating element if the measured inductance does not match one or more predetermined inductance values; each of which corresponds to a type of aerosol-generating object designed for use with the device. Alternatively, if the measured inductance differs significantly from a baseline inductance, the control unit may assume that an aerosol-generating object designed for use with the device has been installed. In this case, the control unit may activate the electrical current supply to the heating element to begin heating the aerosol-generating object. If the device can be used with different types of aerosol-generating objects, one or more predefined inductance values may be included, each corresponding to a type of aerosol-generating object. In this case, the step of controlling the supply of electrical current to the heating element may involve changing the current supplied to the heating element to provide a predefined heating profile, whereby the predefined heating profile is selected based on which of the predefined inductance values matches the measured inductance. That is, the appropriate heating profile is selected for the type of aerosol-generating object placed inside the device. For example, different types of aerosol-generating objects may contain different amounts of magnetic material, as well as different amounts of magnetic particles, as described above. In this case, each of the predetermined inductance values corresponds to the inductance of the inductor when placed near the corresponding amount of magnetic material. Additionally, or alternatively, the device may be designed to work with different types of aerosol-generating objects containing magnetic material, each with a different Curie temperature, as well as different types of magnetic particles, as described above. In such configurations, the step of controlling the electrical current supply to the heating element involves activating the current supply to the heating element to heat the aerosol-generating object to a temperature above the Curie temperature of many of the magnetic particles. In this case, the method also involves repeatedly measuring the inductance of the inductor and the temperature of the heating element during the heating of the aerosol-generating object, and determining when a drop in inductance occurs during the heating of the aerosol-generating object; the drop in inductance is an indication that many magnetic particles have been heated to their Curie temperature. The current supplied to the heating element is then varied to provide a predetermined heating profile, in which the predetermined heating profile is selected based on at least one of the following: the time when the measured drop in inductance occurs and the temperature of the heating element at which the measured drop in inductance occurs. As described above, an electrically heated aerosol generator may include a conductive coil that constitutes both the heating element and the inductor. In this case, the step to activate the current supply to the heating element to heat the aerosol-generating substrate involves sending the current supply through the conductive coil in pulses, and the step to repeatedly measure the inductance of the inductor involves measuring the inductance of the conductive coil between current pulses. The step of sending the current supply through the conductive coil in pulses may involve sending the electrical current supply through the conductive coil in pulses at a frequency between approximately 1 MHz and approximately 30 MHz, preferably between approximately 1 MHz and approximately 10 MHz, and even more preferably between approximately 5 MHz and approximately 7 MHz. The invention will now be explained in more detail by way of illustration, referencing the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows an aerosol-generating object in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 shows an aerosol-generating object from Figure 1 placed inside an electrically heated aerosol-generating device in accordance with the present invention. Figure 1 shows an aerosol-generating object (10) containing an aerosol-generating substrate (12), a hollow acetate tube (14), a polymer filter (16), a mouthpiece (18) and an outer wrapping (20). The aerosol-generating substrate (12) contains several ferromagnetic particles (22) dispersed in a tobacco plate (24). The mouthpiece (18) contains a plate of cellulose acetate fibers. Figure 2 shows an aerosol-generating object (10) placed inside an electrically heated aerosol generator (30). The device (30) comprises a heating element (32) containing a base (34) and a heating blade (36) that penetrates the aerosol-generating substrate (12). The heating blade (36) contains a conductive coil (38) designed to receive an electrical current supply from a battery (40) supplied inside the device (30). A control unit (42) controls the operation of the device (30), which includes the supply of electrical current from the battery (40) to the conductive coil (38) of the heating blade (36). During use, the control unit (42) detects the change in the inductance of the conductive coil (38) as a result of the ferromagnetic particles (22) in the aerosol-generating substrate (12) being located near the conductive coil (38), and determines that the aerosol-generating object (10) is suitable for use with the device (30). After determining that the aerosol-generating object (10) is usable with the device (30), the control unit (42) starts sending current from the battery (40) through the conductive coil (38) in pulses to heat the aerosol-generating substrate (12). Between current pulses, the control unit (42) continues to monitor the inductance of the conductive coil (38) to determine the point at which a significant change in inductance occurs. The change in inductance indicates that the ferromagnetic particles (22) have been heated to their Curie temperatures. The control unit determines the temperature by measuring the resistance of the conductive coil (38) at the moment the change in inductance occurs. Based on the Curie temperature, the control unit (42) determines the type of aerosol-generating object (10) and selects the appropriate heating profile.
