Description

The proposed alphabetical index to the vocabulary significantly speeds up the process of finding the desired word in the dictionary and has the peculiarity that the entry into a group of words starting with a letter is not placed at the beginning of the group, but usually in the middle. In addition, the second and third, and sometimes the fourth letters of the words placed on this page are placed on the half of the pages.

The initial letters of the words in alphabetical order are located in the cut-outs along the long edge of the dictionary (Fig. 1) or. which is less convenient, along its small edges, upper and lower (Fig. 2). The shape of the notches for the initial letters of the alphabet is chosen most conveniently, for example, a semicircle.

Each cut is located in the dictionary so that it falls in the middle, and not at the beginning, as usual, of a set of words beginning with this letter.

The second and third, and sometimes the fourth letters of words are placed on the floor x on both sides of the open dictionary. Words in a dictionary, as is well known, are arranged alphabetically, with all letters (second, third, etc.) constituting a given word being submitted alphabetically. Half of the words following the first letter are located on the left margin of the opened dictionary, and the other half is on the right.

Both on the left and on the right margins of all pages are clipped "steps, each of which contains four horizontal lines (Fig. 3). On each of the steps on the left, a larger second letter of the word is printed (Fig. 3-4). In four rows, the steps are arranged in columns of third and sometimes fourth letters of words. Each row of the stair corresponds to its own vertical column in the dictionary, and the number of rows (four) of the stair corresponds to the number of columns of words on two sheets of the dictionary (for each sheet, for example, two columns). The rows of steps, therefore, are located in the intervals between the second letters of the words.

For example, the second letter of all English words that begin with the letter L may be one of the nine

are the same size and placed to the left of the steps.

In the rows of steps there are the third (and sometimes the fourth) letters of words located in the corresponding column of one or another page.

If the third letters of the words on a given page of the dictionary change rapidly, then the third letters are marked on the same lines of steps and separated from each other by a dash or a period with a comma.

The dictionary is opened by the first letter of the word. On the left, on one of the simultaneously visible steps (Fig. 4), is the second letter of the word. The third, and sometimes the fourth letter is in the corresponding row of the step. The search word is in the dictionary column corresponding to the row of the step. Pressing this step with your finger, make a second dictionary transfer and find the search word in the corresponding column.
