Description

There is a method of hydrophobization of full-vinyl alcohol fibers with terephthalic acid dialdehyde in the presence of sulfuric acid as a catalyst.

The disadvantage of this method is that acetalization of the wire is not carried out in an aqueous medium, but in solutions of methyl alcohol and, moreover, the fiber must be treated in an atmosphere of superheated steam at 215 ° for 3 minutes, which is not economically profitable.

The proposed method differs from the known one in that acetalization is carried out in aqueous solution in order to simplify the process and improve working conditions.

The acetalization of the fiber is carried out as follows.

The freshly spun fiber, mine thermal stabilization stage, is sent to a bath containing 18–20% sulfuric acid, 20% sodium sulfate, 0.8–1.0% terephthalic dialdehyde, and water. With a slow increase in temperature (at G per minute), the bath is heated from 10 to 70 °. At 70 °, acetalization is continued for another 2 hours so that the total acetalization time is 3 hours. At the end of the acetalization, the fiber is washed and dried.

The fiber processed according to the described method has a strength of 18–20 km of breaking length; It has a haired and fretted neck, which allows it to be used for blending with wool.
