Abstract
A positioning apparatus (101) for a tape library (103) is provided. The positioning apparatus (101) comprises a tray (105) movable relative to the tape library (103) along an axis (107), at least one sensor (20) operable to detect a reference position (302) along the axis (107), and a controller (115). The controller (115) is operable to track a distance (305) moved by the tray (105) in a first direction along the axis (107) until the at least one sensor (20) detects the reference position (302). The controller (115) is further operable to encode a first position (309) of the tray (105) based on the tracked distance (305) and a first pre-determined offset distance (307) of the first position (309) of the tray (105) from the reference position (302). A corresponding method is also disclosed.
