Abstract
A varistor block (1) has an insulating ring (2) of composite material surrounding the circular-cylindrical envelope surface of the block. The ring is a ceramic matrix and/or a bursting-preventing bandage of organic fibres. The ring may be of silicon carbide or boron carbide. The fibres may be aramid, 'Kevlar' (RTM) or 'Twaron' (RTM)
