Abstract

A press roll 2 intended to interact with a counter-roll 1 to form a press with a long nip for paper or board machines is described, which press roll comprises two end walls 4, 5, an elastic shell 3 which is fixed by its edge portions 8, 9 to peripheral parts 6, 7 of the end walls, and support members 12, 13 for the end walls, which end walls comprise on the one hand slide bearings 37 arranged so as to allow axial movement of the end walls in relation to the support members and on the other hand bearing members 35 arranged so as to allow rotation of the shell and the end walls in relation to the support members, in addition to which the press roll comprises a pressure shoe 15 which is intended, together with the counter-roll 1, to form a pressing zone, the edge portions of the shell being located outside and at an axial distance from the counter-roll so that the shell, within the region of the pressing zone, has outer sections 20, 21 which, when the press roll presses against the counter-roll, are inclined radially inwards from the peripheral end wall parts to the pressure shoe 15. According to the invention, the end walls comprise a circumferential member 38 which is coaxial with regard to the axis of rotation 36 of the shell and is arranged to allow free axial movement of the peripheral end wall parts 6, 7 in the direction towards the counter-roll 1 and the pressure shoe 15 by virtue of the action of axial stresses which arise in the shell 3 on its passage through the pressing zone, which axial stresses in the shell are in this way reduced. <IMAGE>
