Abstract

An introducer has a cannula for inserting into a blood vessel together with a puncturing needle and through which the catheter is introduced after removing the needle. The cannula front end has reduced or tapering o.d. and i.d. and an expandable part which is severed by the catheter on introduction to permit passage of a catheter with o.d. greater than cannula front end i.d. The expandable part pref. comprises a slit from which a line of weakness extends over the remaining length of the cannula. The needle front end pref. has a reduced or tapering diameter corresponding to that of the cannula.
