Abstract

Fuel consumption is optimized by the following steps: a) determine the actual value of the momentary fuel consumption and determine the traction power available momentarily at the wheels of the motor vehicle, b) compute the fuel consumption values to be expected for all alternatively selectable gear stages of the change-speed transmission, basing on the already determined traction power and simultaneously assuming that the vehicle speed is maintained constant, c) determine the gear stage giving the best fuel consumption by cyclic comparison of the known consumption values specific to each gear stage with each other, d) derive alternative methods from the result obtained such as optical display of the gear to be selected manually or automatic gear change by electromagnetic or electrohydraulic actuators, e) cut in or cut out engine cylinders in order to vary the mean working pressure in the cylinder so that the operating point of the engine is as close as possible to the minimum level of the specific fuel consumption, f) start the same cycle again and repeat in periodically endless sequence. e
