Abstract
A sliding discharge valve 6 of a filling hopper 1, which is in the form of a cover plate of an extruding cylinder 4, has a single aperture 7, through which material 2 to be extruded passes from the filling hopper, and unapertured parts on either side of the aperture, the valve being reciprocated between positions where each of the unapertured parts alternately blocks the flow of material, so that the aperture passes twice across the outlet 3 of the filling hopper during each filling operation, whereby the void 15 created after the first pass (from the position of Fig. 1, not shown) is filled during the second pass (to the Fig. 3 position, not shown). <IMAGE>
