Abstract
Thienamycin sulphoxide of the structural formula I <IMAGE> and the non-toxic, pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof are obtained by oxidising thienamycin and converting the resulting compound where appropriate into the non-toxic, pharmaceutically acceptable salts. Thienamycin sulphone and the non-toxic, pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof are obtained by preparing thienamycin sulphoxide of the structural formula I, and further oxidising the resulting compound and converting the compound obtained in this way where appropriate into the non-toxic, pharmaceutically acceptable salts. The compounds which can be prepared according to the invention are generally valuable antibiotics which are active against various Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.
