Abstract

1464009 Polyetherimides GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 2 May 1974 [22 June 1973] 19331/74 Heading C3R [Also in Division B2] Polyetherimides have formula where R is (a) optionally halogenated C 6-20 aromatic hydrocarbon, (b) alkyl or C 2-8 - alkylene-terminated C 2-20 polydiorganosiloxane, or cycloalkylene, or (c) where Q is O, CO, SO 2 , S, or C x H 2x where x= 1-5, m=0-1, and n=2-2500. They may be prepared by reacting 2,2<SP>1</SP>,3,3<SP>1</SP>-tetracarboxydiphenylether dianhydride with H 2 NRNH 2 in organic solvent at #130‹ C. while removing water of reaction, e.g. during reflux or by molecular sieve. They may be recovered by precipitating in methanol. They can be used for injection-moulding and may contain glass fibres. Solutions in a phenol may be used for coating wire, e.g. of Cu.
