Abstract

A battery-powered chainsaw comprises a hand guard (32) mechanically coupled to a brake assembly via a brake operation mechanism. The hand guard (32) is movable between a brake engagement position, in which the hand guard (32) brings the brake assembly (53) to an engaged state, a brake release position, in which the hand guard (32) brings the brake assembly (53) to a disengaged state, and a neutral position, between the brake engagement and brake release positions, in which the hand guard (32) does not change the state of the brake assembly (53). A brake state detector arrangement (64) detects when the hand guard (32) brings the brake assembly (53) to the engaged state and when the hand guard (32) brings the brake assembly (53) to the disengaged state. A brake state indicator (66) maintains the latest brake state when the hand guard (32) is in the neutral position, and indicates the maintained latest brake state to the control circuitry (30).
