Abstract

In order to provide flow control in a congested cellular authentication environment, a method is introduced that allows a network function [150] to distribute incoming requests to attach to cellular network nodes [140] over multiple subscription resources [700] in one or many authentication servers [160], spreading the load and allowing the network [100] to cope with a highly congested scenario that could otherwise escalate into further network node failures.

Claims (3)

Claims
1) A method providing load balancing and flow control of network attach requests, performed by a Network function (150) in a home network, the Network Function (150) having no prior knowledge of any Internal subscription identity (701) to External subscription identity (801) or External subscription identity (801) to Internal subscription identity (701) relation, the method comprising:
2)
3) a) b) receiving a request from a Wireless device (120), to attach to an external network (130), wherein the request from the Wireless device (120) is received via a network node (140) in the external Network (130), and wherein the wireless device (120) contains a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) (110) upon which an External subscription resource (800) is provisioned, the External subscription resource (800) comprising an external subscription identity (801), included in the request; temporarily linking to the External subscription resource (800) with which the request was made, any available Internal subscription resource (700) comprising an internal subscription identity (701) installed in any available Authentication server (160) in the home network, providing the Wireless device (120) with access to the Network (130) thereby distributing the load in the network; A method according to claim 1, wherein the method comprises: The Network function (150), for communication from Wireless device (120) through the Network node (140) to the Authentication server (160), linking the External subscription identity (801) with which the request was made to the selected Internal subscription identity (701) for the duration of the Session; A method according to claim 1, wherein the method comprises: The Network function (150) having knowledge of a set of Internal subscription resources (700) that has been allocated for its use where the Internal subscription identity (701), or a range of Internal subscription identities, are the only information on record.
