Abstract

The cladding method comprises placing explosive charges (3) in contact with the inner surface of the inner tube. The inner tube is filled with a pressure transmitting medium e.g. water. All the explosive charges are detonated simultaneously to produce local metallurgical bonds (6) and to expand the inner tube into abutment with the outer tube. The charges are pref. sized to produce a metallurgical bond 1-8 cm2. The explosive charges may be applied in strings which extend axially or helically. The explosive charge(s) may be inside the tube to amplify the pressure wave and improve the effectiveness in expanding the inner tube. A gap (8) is defined between the inner and outer tubes before detonation. The gap is evacuated to 1 mbar before detonating the explosive charges. The explosive charges are placed in plastic, paper or rubber hose or onto a plastic or rubber sheet before insertion into the tube.
