Abstract
1,070,374. Metal-vapour lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Aug. 13, 1964 [Sept. 4, 1963], No. 33058/64. Heading H1D. In order to prevent failure of a mercury discharge lamp, resulting from electrolytic decomposition of a metal halide, such as sodium iodide, which is contained within the lamp, the starting electrode is electrically connected to the adjacent main electrode during normal operation. In one form a discharge lamp1 comprises a vitreous outer jacket 2 enclosing a quartz arc tube 12 having main thermionic electrodes 13, 14 and a starting electrode 15, an ionizable filling in the tube 12 comprising mercury, a metal halide and an inert starting gas, a starting resistor 33 between the starting electrode and main electrode 14, and a thermal switch, comprising a bi-metal strip 35, attached to the lead 16 of the second main electrode 13. When starting, the full voltage is developed between the starting electrode 15 and main electrode 13 but when the lamp becomes heated the free end of the strip 35 moves across so that a molybdenum contact 36 engages the lead 18 of the starting electrode, so that the two electrodes 13, 15 are at the same potential. With the above arrangement there is, during running, a continual slight loss through the starting resistor, as it is then connected across the main electrodes. This disadvantage is avoided, according to a second embodiment, wherein the bi-metal strip is arranged to form a change-over switch by means of which, when starting, the starting electrode is connected through the starting resistor to the upper electrode but, during normal running, it is disconnected therefrom and connected to the lower main electrode.
