Abstract

Liquid detergent composition containing:! (a) from about 1% to about 75% surfactant by weight; ! (b) from about 10% to about 95% water by weight; ! (c) from about 0.01% to about 5% neutral metalloprotease by weight; and! (d) an amount of the neutral metalloprotease inhibitor such that the inhibitor binds to at least 90% of the neutral metalloprotease molecules prior to use, with appropriate dilution of the detergent composition causing the inhibitor to dissociate from at least about 25% of the bound neutral metalloprotease molecules. ! 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein appropriate dilution of the detergent composition results in the dissociation of the inhibitor from at least about 45% of the bound neutral metalloprotease molecules. ! 3. The composition of claim 1, wherein the amount of inhibitor is from about 0.01% to about 15% by weight. ! 4. The composition of claim 1, wherein the inhibitor competitively inhibits neutral metalloprotease with an apparent Ki of about 5 mM to about 15 mM at a pH of about 7.5 to about 9.5. ! 5. The composition of claim 1, wherein the neutral metalloprotease is isolated from Bacillus sp. ! 6. The composition of claim 5, wherein the neutral metalloprotease is NprE. ! 7. The composition of claim 1, wherein the inhibitor is a protein hydrolyzate. ! 8. The composition of claim 7, wherein the protein hydrolyzate is selected from wheat gluten hydrolyzate, soy protein acid hydrolyzate, cow's milk casein acid hydrolyzate, vegetable protein enzymatic hydrolyzate, and combinations thereof. ! 9. The composition of claim 1, wherein the inhibitor comprises a hydrolysis product resulting from the cleavage of a protein by the action of at least one neutral metalloprotease. ! 10. �
