Abstract

Provided is a method for producing a glass substrate for a magnetic recording medium that prevents adhesion of the glass substrate to the polishing pad of the upper platen and generation of leaching marks on the glass substrate and exhibilts superior uniform flatness and smoothnness in the plane of the main surface. The method for producing a glass substrate for a magnetic recording medium includes a shape-forming step of glass substrate; a main surface polishing step of the glass substrate; and a cleaning step, in which an effective area ration of a polishing surface of the poilishing pad (A-B)/Ax100) is 75 to 98% for an upper polishing pad and is 99% or more (more preferably 100%) for a lower polishing pad.
