A pneumatic conveying tube system comprises a drive tube 1 divided pneumatically into sections 8, 9, 10, 14, 2, an operating air tube 3 incorporating a suction-type blower 4 and communicating with the drive tube at the ends of each section via valves 11, 21, 31, 41 actuated by detectors 13, 23, 33, 43, 53 which sense the passing of a dispatch carrier along route 1. Further valves 12, 22, 32, 42 associated with the detectors open the route 1 to atmosphere. In operation, initially all the valves 11, 21, 31, 41 are open and all the valves to atmosphere closed whereby a carrier placed in the route 1 is sucked from a dispatch station until detector 13 is reached whereby valve 11 closes and valve 12 opens. Air is then sucked into the system via the open valve 12 and the carrier moves along to the next detector 23 where a similar action is effected. Upon the carrier being sensed by the downstream detector 53, all the valves to atmosphere are closed and all the valves to the air tube 3 are opened whereupon another carrier may be dispatched. An air tube 6 bridging the section 2 has its own suction-type blower 5, the effect of which is to reduce the speed of the carrier in the section 2 to a predetermined velocity. The detectors are of the type which are actuated by means other than mechanical contact with the carrier. The common blower 4 may be replaced by a plurality thereof.
