Abstract

One of the rollers is coated with an abrasive. The second roller may be hard or may have a deformable coating. Optionally, one or both of the rollers can be machined in the form of a tooth to give a ripple pattern to the substrate. Hydraulic, pneumatic or other apparatus may be used to manually and / or automatically adjust the gap between the rollers. One or both of the rollers may be heated to enhance the marring action. Cam mechanisms can also be used to adjust the pressure in the nip.
