통신 서비스들에 대한 비용을 지불하기 위해 지불 소스를 선택하는 방법 및 장치 {METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR SELECTING A PAYMENT SOURCE TO PAY FOR COMMUNICATION SERVICES}
본 발명은 통신 서비스의 지불 방식을 정하는 방법 및 장치에 관한 것이다. 보다 구체적으로, 본 발명은 복수의 대안의 소스 중에 하나의 지불 소스를 자동으로 선택하는 동시에, 그 선택 동작의 수행시 사용자의 추가적인 입력을 상당히 줄이거나 제거하는 방법 및 장치에 관한 것이다.
본 발명은, 셀룰러 전화기들로 구성된 통신 시스템에서 상당히 유용할 수 있지만, 휴대용 컴퓨터, PDA(portable data assistant) 및 인터넷 장치 등의 다양한 다른 종류의 전자 장치에서 이용될 수 있다. 임의의 전자 장치에 대해서는 통신 링크가 다른 장치에 대해서 또는 정상적으로 사용되지 않고/또는 그 사용에 대한 지불을 요구하는 링크를 통한 서비스에 대해서 설정되어야만 한다.
그 중요한 용도 중 하나가 서비스를 요청하는 장치와 서비스를 위한 다른 장치 사이에 무선 주파수(RF) 링크를 적용하는 것이지만, 아래에 상세히 기술되어 있는 바와 같이, 지불을 요구하는 통신 링크가 필수적으로 서비스 장치와 일부 액세 스 지점(access point) 사이의 링크일 필요가 없다는 것에 주목해야 한다.
본 발명의 적용 분야는 온라인으로, 자동으로 및 실시간으로 통신 서비스의 비용 지불을 운용하는데 있다.
하나의 종래의 통신 링크는 셀룰러 전화기 가입자가 특정 제공업체가 운용하는 링크를 이용하여 호출 사용자와 피호출 사용자 사이에 통신을 설정하는 것이다. 그 통신 링크의 서비스 제공업체에게 지불하는 기술에는 다양한 기술들이 적용될 수 있다.

통신 링크에 대한 지불은 화폐 정보가 전자 장치 내에서 유지되는 전자 지갑을 통하여 처리될 수 있으며, 그러한 전자 장치는 미국 특허 제5,221,838호에 개시되어 있다. 요약해 보면, 전자 지갑은 계좌 번호, PIN 번호, 서비스 제공업체(예를 들면, 신용 카드 회사, 통신 서비스 제공업체 등)의 식별 번호(identity)와 같은 가입자와 관련된 정보 및 사용자가 트랜잭션에 참가할 수 있게 하기 위하여 서비스 제공업체와 자동으로 통신하기 위한 정보를 포함한다. 요청된 서비스에 대한 비용은 가입자의 직불 카드로부터 공제되거나, 대안으로 가입자의 신용 카드에 대하여 청구될 수 있다. 통신 서비스는 가입자가 소유한 가입자의 과금 카드 또는 직불 카드로 청구될 수 있고, 그 서비스에 대한 지불 모드로서 전자 장치(즉, 전화기)에 부착된 키패드 또는 자기 판독기를 통하여 사용자의 계좌 정보를 손으로 입력하는 것에 의해 제공되거나 직불 카드 또는 신용 카드 서비스를 스폰서하는 금융사에 대해 구두로 제공될 수 있다. 직불 카드의 경우에, 서비스 비용은 현재의 차감 잔액으로부터 공제된다. 신용 카드의 경우에, 서비스 비용은 제공된 서비스에 후속하여 오프라인으로 고객에게 청구된다. 직불 또는 신용 카드의 스폰서는 통신 링크를 제공하는 서비스 제공업체들에게 지불할 책임이 있다. 통신 링크를 제공하는 서비스 제공업체는 호출자와 피호출자 모두가 동일한 홈 셀 내에 있는 경우에 하나의 서비스 제공업체일 수 있고, 또한 호출자와 피호출자 중 하나 또는 모두가 가입자의 베이스 셀 이외의 서비스 제공업체의 이용이 필요한 로밍 모드에 있는 경우에 하나 이상의 서비스 제공업체일 수도 있다.
2개의 전화기 또는 셀룰러폰 사용자간의 통신 링크를 설정하는데 이용되는 다른 지불 절차는 수신자 부담(reverse charge) 방식이다(즉, 호출자는 피호출자와 통신 링크를 요청하고, 또한 서비스 제공업체에 요청하여 피호출자가 통신 링크에 대한 비용을 지불할 것인지를 묻는다).
전화 회사 등의 몇몇 서비스 제공업체들은 800 전화 번호 교환을 접속할 때 서비스를 제공할 수 있으며, 그에 따라 통신 링크에 대한 비용은 고객에게 오프라인으로 청구될 수 있다.
또 다른 서비스 비용 지불 기술에 있어서, 사용자는 통신 서비스와의 교환을 위해 광고의 수신에 동의할 수 있으며, 그 통신 링크의 비용은 광고자에 의해 흡수된다.
다양한 다른 기술들이 통신 서비스에 대한 비용을 지불하는 데 이용될 수 있는 것으로 보여질 수 있지만, 현재의 기술의 단점은 모든 다양한 지불 방식 및 유형들이 분리되어 있고 서로 독립적이라는 사실에 있다. 일예로서, 한가지 지불 방법 또는 방식이 어떤 이유에서든 이용 불가능하다고 가정하면, 그 서비스를 요청하는 사용자는 다른 지불 방식을 선택하기 위하여 적극적으로 노력해야 한다. 예를 들면, 셀룰러 전화망의 가입자가 호출의 신청을 시도하고, 그 서비스 요청이 어떤 이유에서든 부정된다고 가정하면, 통신 링크의 요청을 시도하는 가입자는 대안의 지불 방식을 통신망에 통지하기 위하여 개인적으로 분주히 노력해야 한다.
종래 기술의 단점에 대한 보다 상세한 예는 도 1을 고려하면 보다 잘 이해될 수 있으며, 도 1은 가입자 식별 모듈(SIM) 카드(14)를 수납할 수 있는 셀룰러 전화기(12)를 가입자에게 제공한 이동 통신 세계화 시스템(global system for mobile communications, GSM) 타입의 통신망을 도시한다. 가입자는 서비스 제공업체(20)와 서비스 접촉을 유지한다. 셀룰러 전화기(12)를 할당 받은 가입자는 가입자의 홈 PLMN(public land mobile network) (18)에서 멀리 떨어져 있는 방문한 PLMN(16)에서 로밍 중이다. 단계(S1)에 도시된 바와 같이, 호출 비용은 서비스 계약의 조건에 따르며, 그에 따라 피호출 가입자(도시 생략)와 통신하는 가입자는 SIM 카드(14)에 관한 지불 제공업체 정보가 그 방문한 PLMN(16)으로 전달되게 함으로써 호출을 시작한다. 단계(S2)에서, 이러한 SIM 정보는 홈 PLMN에 액세스하는데 이용된다. 단계(S3)에서, 홈 PLMN(18)은 이동 장치에 대한 서비스 계약의 계좌 상태에 대하여 문의한다.

앞서 설명한 것은 서비스 제공업체가 서비스의 권한을 부여한 경우에 활동을 종료하는 예이다. 그러나, 서비스 제공업체가 호출 비용의 지불을 부정하는 경우에, 예를 들면, 호출자가 계약 한도를 초과한 경우에 또는 서비스 제공업체가 도달될 수 없는 경우에, 그 이유에 상관없이, 1차적이고 배타적인 지불 방법은 실패했다. 현존하는 기술은 호출자가 1차 지불 방법을 실패한 사실에 불구하고 호출을 원하는 경우에 과금 카드 번호를 입력할 수 있게 프롬프팅한다. 이 기술은 대안의 지불 정보를 손으로 입력할 필요 뿐만 아니라 호출 신청의 지연을 발생시킨다. 또한, 그 기술은 호출 이동 전화기와 통신 시스템에 접속한 회원들 사이의 통신 링크를 불필요하게 방해한다.
전술한 예에서, 1차 지불 방법이 이동 장치의 사용자가 서비스 제공업체와 갖는 서비스 계약에 의하더라도, 1차 지불 수단이 앞서 설명한 다른 지불 기술 중 하나일 수 있다는 것을 이해해야 한다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 통신 서비스를 시도하는 사용자는, 1차 지불 수단이 실패하는 경우에 다른 대안 중 하나에 의존해야만 하거나, 다른 대안의 수단을 이용할 수 없거나 현존하지 않는 경우에 호출을 종료할 수 없을 수 있다.
본 발명의 목적은 사용자 및/또는 사용자 장치와 관련되는 2개 이상의 지불 수단 및/또는 지불 제공업체 중 하나의 자동 선택을 제공함으로써 종래 기술의 문제점을 해결하는 것이며, 또한 제3자와의 자발적인 접속을 허용하는 동안에 로밍 네트워크의 오퍼레이터가 하나보다 많은 수의 홈 네트워크와 조정하는 것을 허용하는 것이다. 이 기술은 고객이 어떤 특정 서비스 또는 호출자 조정에 가입하지 않은 경우에 이용될 수 있다.

그 기재된 기술의 대안으로서, 예를 들어 직불 카드 제공업체(22)와 이동 장치(12)의 소유자 사이의 계약 조정이 호출자가 호출자의 직불 카드의 사용을 위한 인가를 제공하는 것을 필요로 하지 않는 경우, 단계(S4 및 S5)가 제거되고, 그 방문된 PLMN(16)은 단계(S6)에서 직접 지불 요청하며, 단계(S7 내지 S9)들은 지불 만기가 되어 앞서 기재한 방법과 비슷한 방법을 따른다.

단계(S24)로 돌아가서, 호출자에게 프롬프트될 필요가 없는 경우에, 프로그램은 단계(S29)로 분기하여, 그 네트워크는 호출자가 호출에 대하여 미리 설정한 제한 사항이 있는지 여부를 결정한다. 미리 설정한 제한 사항이 없는 경우, 프로그 램은 단계(S30)로 분기하여, 지불 정보는 인가받은 양을 포함하여 지불 제공업체로부터 네트워크로 전송된다.

앞서 논의한 예들이 무선 링크와 같은 통신 링크를 기술하더라도, 지불을 요청하는 링크가 장치와 몇몇 액세스 포인트의 링크가 아닐 수 있는 상황이 될 수 있다는 것에 주목해야 한다. 예를 들면, 하나의 링크는 지상선 접속 및/또는 위성 등의 중계 RF 접속을 포함한다. 또한, 그 링크는 부분적으로 지상선 접속이 될 수 있고, 부분적으로 무선 접속이 될 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 본 발명은 그러한 통신 링크에 적용가능하다. 본 발명은 또한 제3자와의 자발적인 접속을 허용하는 동안에 로밍 네트워크의 오퍼레이터가 하나보다 많은 수의 홈 네트워크와 조정하는 것을 가능하게 한다. 이 기술은 고객이 특정 서비스 또는 호출자 지불 조정(여기에 필요한 보다 많은 정보)에 가입하지 않은 어플리케이션에 이용될 수 있다.
전술한 본 발명의 실시예에 있어서, 대안의 지불 제공업체를 식별하는 데이터는 SIM 카드에 저장될 수 있다. 또한, 범용 카드, 자기 스트립에 관한 정보를 운반하는 신용 카드 타입 카드 또는 스마트 카드 등과 같은 어떠한 다른 타입의 메모리 또는 저장 수단이 데이터를 제공하는데 이용될 수 있고, 이들은 이동 장치에 탈착가능하여 데이터를 시스템으로 전달하거나, 그 이동 장치에 제공된 적합한 저장 장치(도시 생략)에 전달하여 차후에 시스템으로 전송할 수 있게 하는 것이 이해될 수 있다. 대안으로, 이동 장치는 각각의 대안의 제공업체를 식별하고, 어떤 적합한 수단에 의해 그 제공업체로 전달되는 데이터를 포함하는 개별 메모리 장치를 가질 수 있다.

통신 링크를 탐색하고 지불 제공업체를 설정하는 장치는 블루투스 또는 IEEE 802.11(필요한 정보가 더 많음) 등의 개인 네트워크에 의해 장치와 통신할 수 있다.
다른 대안으로서, 호출자에 관한 데이터는 인터넷에 부속되거나 다른 방법으로 인터넷과 관련된 서버에 저장될 수 있으며, 그 홈 PLMN은 인터넷으로 서버에 액세스하여 대안의 지불 정보를 검색할 수 있다.

    통신 서비스들에 대한 비용을 지불하는 책임을 수락할 수 있는 선호하는 지불 제공자 및 하나 이상의 대안의 지불 제공자들을 식별하는 데이터를 저장하도록 구성되고, 상기 이동 장치에 착탈가능하게 삽입되는 가입자 식별 모듈(SIM) 카드; 및
    하나의 지불 제공자가 통신 링크의 설정에 대한 비용을 지불하는 책임의 수락을 나타내는 신호를 수신기에 전송할 때까지 선호하는 순서에 따라 각각의 지불 제공자와 교신함으로써, 상기 선호하는 지불 제공자 및 하나 이상의 대안의 지불 제공자들을 식별하는 데이터로부터 지불 제공자를 선택하고, 선택되는 지불 제공자에게 계산된 비용을 전달하도록 구성된 송신기
    를 포함하는 이동 장치.
