Abstract

Description

가정용 오락 시스템 및 그 동작 방법 {HOME ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM AND METHOD OF ITS OPERATION}
1990년 12월 11일에 특허가 부여된 미합중국 특허번호 제4,977,455호는 사용자가 큐(cue)에 응답한 이후에 추가 정보(supplemental information)를 제공하는 시스템 및 프로세스를 개시하고 있다. 상기 큐는 방송 프로와 관련된 추가 정보의이용 가능성(availability)을 표시하기 위해 방송 중에 제공된다. 상기 추가 정보에 대한 스케줄 정보가 방송 프로와 함께 전송되지만, 추가 정보는 나중에 전송되는 것이 바람직하다. 사용자가 상기 큐에 응답한 이후, 스케줄 정보가 먼저 저장되며, 이후 상기 추가 정보를 기록하는데 사용된다. 일 실시예에서, 추가 데이터는 비디오 신호의 VBI(video blanking interval)로 전송된다.

본 발명은 가정용 오락 시스템 및 그 동작 방법에 관한 것으로, 보다 구체적으로, 가정용 오락 시스템에서 향후 방송될 텔레비전 프로그램의 선전을 위한 전자 프로그램 가이드(EPG) 기능의 활용에 관한 것이다.

전술한 PCT 출원을 참조하여, 텔레비전 프로그램에 대한 EPG 정보가 시간 및 채널에 의해 검색될 수 있다; 예를 들면, 기설정된 시간 목록은 텔레비전 프로그램용 쇼 정보 패키지(SIP)를 나타내는 어드레스를 포함한다. 아이콘(52)을 갖는 텔레비전 프로그램 각각은 나중에 방송될 광고 프로그램의 스케줄 정보, 즉 날짜, 시간, 채널 및 길이를 나타내는 어드레스를 자신의 SIP 내에 포함시킴으로써, 2가지 텔레비전 프로그램의 정보를 링크시킨다. 메모리(22) 내에 저장된 프로그램 목록 파일은 향후 광고가 나갈 프로그램에 관한 정보가 현재 프로그램에 "링크"되기만 하면 여러 상이한 방식으로 구성될 수 있고, 즉, 현재 프로그램이 EPG 기능을 신호로 전달하는 아이콘과 함께 표시되는 경우 검색될 수 있다. 예를 들면, 향후 방송될 프로그램에 관한 정보는 포인터에 의해 링크되는 대신에 현재 프로그램과 같은 파일의 일부가 됨에 의해 광고를 포함하는 현재 프로그램에 링크될 수 있다.
녹화 기능이 선택되는 경우, 시청자가 녹화 선택사항을 선택할 수 있도록 도 4에 예시된 광고(50) 상에 상자(56)가 중첩된다. 녹화 선택사항 메뉴는 상자(56) 내에 표시된다. (이들 녹화 선택사항은 이들이 EPG에 의해 정상적으로 수행될 수 있는 기능이기 때문에 그 용어가 본 명세서 내에 사용되는 경우 EPG 기능으로 또한 고려될 수 있다.) 시청자는 다음과 같이 광고 프로그램을 녹화할 수 있다;

추가적인 특징으로, 도 4에서 시리즈 선택사항이 선택되는 경우, 시리즈 1회분(episode)마다의 목록이 표시된다; 특정한 1회분이 선택되는 경우, 이후 그 줄거리가 표시된다. 상기 줄거리로부터 시청자는 시청 또는 녹화하도록 스케줄되는 상기 시리즈 1회분을 개별적으로 선택할 수 있다.
도 3 및 도 4에 도시된 메뉴는 EPG 데이터베이스와 함께 메모리(22) 내에 저장되고 비디오 스위치 또는 도 1에 도시되지 않은 다른 수단에 의해 광고의 화상위에 중첩될 수 있다.
세부 사항 기능이 선택되는 경우, 세부 사항(프로그램 설명) 정보는 향후 광고가 나갈 프로그램의 SIP로부터 검색되며 TV(20) 화면에 표시된다.

EPG 기능의 선택 메뉴(도 3)를 호출하는 단일 아이콘(52)(도 1 참조) 대신에, 복수의 아이콘(52a, 52b, 52c)이 도 3의 메뉴를 우회하도록 도 7에 도시된 바와 같이 표시될 수 있다. 각각의 아이콘은 시청자가 다른 아이콘과 구별할 수 있도록 단축형으로 표시되며, 예를 들면, "R"은 "녹화", "W"는 "시청, 및 "D"는 세부 사항"을 나타낸다. 시청자가 아이콘 중 하나를 선택하는 경우, 예를 들어, 선택된 아이콘을 클릭함으로써, 대응하는 EPG 기능이 직접 호출된다.

Claims (35)

  1. 표시 화면을 포함하는 가정용 오락 시스템(home entertainment system)을 동작시키는 방법에 있어서,
    a) 텔레비젼 프로그램 정보를 각각 포함하되, 제1 레코드(record)는 제1 텔레비젼 프로그램에 대한 제1 정보 집합을 포함하고, 제2 레코드는 제2 텔레비젼 프로그램에 대한 제2 정보 집합을 포함하고, 상기 제2 레코드에 포함된 정보는 상기 제1 레코드에 액세스함으로써 얻어질 수 있도록 서로 링크되는 복수의 레코드를 메모리에 저장하는 단계;
    b) 상기 제2 텔레비젼 프로그램의 안내(announcement) 또는 광고(advertisement)를 포함하는 상기 제1 텔레비전 프로그램을 상기 표시 화면에 표시하는 단계;
    c) 상기 안내 중, 안내 전 또는 안내 후 상기 제2 텔레비전 프로그램에 대해 전자 프로그램 가이드(electronic program guide) 기능의 이용 가능성(availability)을 신호로 전달하는 단계;
    d) 상기 제1 레코드에 액세스함으로써 상기 제2 정보 집합을 검색하는 단계; 및
    e) 상기 제2 정보 집합으로 상기 전자 프로그램 가이드 기능을 실행시키는 단계
    를 포함하는 가정용 오락 시스템을 동작시키는 방법.
