Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a liquid crystal composition which can be driven over a wide temperature range by two-frequency driving with high rate of response, by using a mixture of several kinds of specific ester compounds as active component.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal composition composed mainly of, or containing at least one of the compounds of the group of (A) a liquid crystal compound or liquid crystal mixture containing at least one of the compounds of formulas IWIII (R and R' are 1W8C straight-chain alkyl), (B) a liquid crystal compound having terminal cyano group and having a large positive dielectric anisotropy (Δε), (C) a liquid crystal compound having a large negative dielectric anisotropy (i.e. large |Δε|) or a rodlike nonliquid crystal compound, and (D) a liquid crystal compound or a rodlike nonliquid-crystal compound which satisfies at least two of the following conditions [conditions; (a) low fc; (b) small temperature dependency of fc; (c) low viscosity; and (d) wide liquid crystal temperature range and low melting point].
