Abstract
PURPOSE: To easily obtain a composite steel ingot of good quality by filling an inert gas in the cavity of the hollow steel ingot at the time of injecting the molten steel forming central layers.
CONSTITUTION: A pressure gas is put into, for example, a tank 1, through a lead- in pipe 4 to increase its pressure. Molten metal 3 for outer layers in a ladle 6 is press-fed into a mold 2 through a pouring pipe 8 and when the level of the molten steel being poured reaches the predetermined height of the mold 2, the pressure in the tank 1 is maintained in that state to allow freezing to progress. When a cylindrical shelly hollow metal ingot of a fixed thickness is obtained, the pressure in the tank 1 is successively lowered to return the unfrozen molten metal 3 into the ladle 6, thereby making an outer layer portion. Next, an inert gas such as Argon is successively supplied through the leak hole 9 in the upper part into the cavity and the molten metal forming central layers is injected, whereby the composite steel ingot is obtained. Since the unfrozen molten steel is discharged by the pressure, its discharging becomes easy and since an inert gas is used, the formation of oxide scale is prevented and quality is improved.
