Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a sharp dichromatic display by providing two sheets of polarizing plates, of which at least one sheet is a color polarizing plate, on one surface of a liquid crystal display element, by orthogonally intersecting their axes of polarization with each other, and providing one sheet of a polarizing plate and a light reflecting plate on the other surface of the element. CONSTITUTION:A red color polarizing palte 8 and a blue color polarizing plate 11 are provided on an upper substrate 1 having, for example, upper plate electrodes 3, in a manner as to orthogonally intersect the axes of polarization (shown by arrows). An ordinary polarizing plate 9 is provided on the outer side of a lower substrate 2 having lower plate electrodes 4, and a light reflecting plate 10 is provided thereunder, whereby a display element 7 sealed with a twisted nematic liquid crystal 6 between both substrates 1 and 2 is obtained. When voltage V0 is applied across the electrodes 3, 4, red color wave lambdaR is absorbed by the plate 9, and blue color wave lambdaB transmits through and reflected by the plates 11, 8, the element 7, and the plate 9 and is reflected. The light other than blue is shut off by the plate 8, whereby the blue color display is obtained. When no voltage V0 is applied, only the red color wave lambdaR is transmitted and reflected, whereby the red color display is obtained. In this way, desired dichromatic display is obtained by the ways of the selection and combination of the colors of the polarizing plates and orthogonal intersection of the polarizing plates.
