Abstract

PURPOSE: An unsaturated carboxylic ester or the like is polymerized in the presence of a maleinized polyisoprene with a specific acid value and the resultant polymer is neutralized to produce a resin dispersed in water that is used as a coating, because it has a specific weight-average molecular weight and gives coating films with high water and corrosion resistance.
CONSTITUTION: In the presence of some 5W40wt% of a maleinized polyisoprene resulting from the addition of a maleic compound to polyisoprene so that the acid value becomes about 20W300, about 5W60wt% of at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of α,β-unsaturated carboxylic alkyl esters such as methyl methacrylate and alkenylbenzenes such as styrene is polymerized in an organic solvent such as butyl cellosolve to give a polymer with a weight average molecular weight of about 2,000W150,000. The resultant polymer is neutralized with a base such as a aqueous triethylamine to produce the objective resin.
