Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent a carbon deposit on a filter by providing a heating element at the upstream side of the filter for burning collected carbon particles. CONSTITUTION:An exhaust gas containing carbon particles is fed through an exhaust manifold into a purifier 4, wherein some carbon particles are caught by a ceramic filter 13 and other carbon particles are caught by a stainless wall filter 8. After a fuel is supplied from an injection nozzle 15 to an upstream area of the ceramic filter 13, the fuel is carried with a flowing gas to an oxidizing catalyst in the filter 13. The fuel is oxidized and burnt by the oxidizing catalyst to produce a heat, which burns and purifies the carbon particles caught by the filter 13 and the filter 8.
