Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reconcile the increase in flying distance of a driven ball with the stabilization of directivity and satisfactorily keep the weight characteristic of a head by making only a part of a face including a sweet area into a double part formed of a face member and a plate material. SOLUTION: The central part of the face 2 of a head 1 which includes the sweet area of the face 2 and corresponds to the area of, for example, 1/2 of the total area of the face forming a driving surface is formed of a double plate material W, extending from the front end of the crown 3 of the head 1 to the front end of a sole 4. The upper and lower parts of the plate material on the reverse side of the face 2 of the double part W are welded to the end of the crown 3 and the end of the sole 4, and score lines 9 are engraved in the face 2. When a ball is driven by the double part, the deformation quantity of the face is increased, and the accumulation of distortion energy of the head is increased, so that the initial speed of the driven ball can be enhanced to increase the flying distance, and the energy loss of the ball can be also suppressed to increase the repulsive coefficient.

2. Description of the Related Art In a wood club having a metal head having a hollow shell structure, which has become mainstream in recent years, the face is formed by a single plate or a single plate-like block. When hitting a golf ball with such a face, it has become a problem that the flight characteristics of the ball largely depend on the amount of deformation of the face that has been deflected by the hit. An attempt to extend the flight distance of a hit ball by using a restoring force based on this deformation amount is disclosed in

A problem with a club head having a plurality of plate members as the whole face is that when the ball is hit off the center of the face surface (that is, the sweet area), for example, the toe is moved away from the center of the face. If the hit point is shifted to the side or the heel side, the inventor may find that the side spin amount becomes excessively large, the bending of the hit ball to the left and right becomes extremely large, and the directivity of the hit ball decreases, as compared with the conventional single-layer face. Confirmed by experiments. Furthermore, the area where the plate material is welded to the head is wide, and the weight of the weld overlay increases, which adversely affects the weight characteristics (center of gravity position and head weight) of the head.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a golf club head which achieves both an increase in the flight distance of a hit ball and stability of directionality, while maintaining good weight characteristics of the head.

FIG. 1 shows a sweet area of the face surface 2 of the head 1 (a hit ball area where 95% of the maximum flight distance can be obtained).
And has a width corresponding to の of the entire area of the face surface 2 serving as a ball striking surface, and has a double-faced face at the center from the front end of the crown 3 of the head 1 to the front end of the sole 4 (this portion). Is indicated by a symbol W). The toe and the heel of the head 1 are indicated by reference numerals 5 and 6, respectively.
The upper and lower portions of the plate member 7 on the back side of the face surface 2 of the double portion W are welded 8 to the end of the crown 3 and the end of the sole 4. Further, score lines 9 are engraved on the face surface 2.

FIG. 2 is a view showing a horizontal cut portion of the face surface 2. A double portion W is formed by stacking a face member 2A and a plate 7, and the upper and lower ends thereof are respectively connected to the end of the crown 3 and the sole 4
The relationship between the single-layer thickness t of the face surface 2 other than the double portion W and the thickness t 0 of the double portion W is t 0 ≧ t. In this embodiment, since the length of the single-layer portion of the face surface 2 from the end of the crown 3 to the end of the sole 4, that is, the span of the face bending at this portion is short, there is no problem in terms of durability even if the thickness is reduced. The surplus weight obtained in (1) can be distributed to the periphery of the head and used for expanding the head volume and controlling the position of the center of gravity.

When the ratio of the double portion W to the total area of the face surface 2 is set to 1/2 to 2/3, it is suitable for an average golfer, and when the ratio is 1/3 to 1/2, it is for advanced golfers. I do. That is, the area of the double portion W is reduced for an advanced golfer who has little variation in hitting points.

Although the double portion W is welded at the end of the crown 3 and the end of the sole 4 in FIG. 1, the length of welding or welding (joining) fixing at the periphery of the double portion W is the entire periphery. It is preferable to set the length to 1 / or less. The reason is that in using the above-described deformation amount of the double portion W, a free end, that is, a non-welded portion is provided on the peripheral edge, and the deflection or deformation at the time of impact is released to thereby reduce the deformation amount of the double portion W. Therefore, the degree of freedom in setting the spring constant can be increased. From this viewpoint, the following types can be applied as the welding fixing method. a. The welding and fixing are performed on the crown 3 side and the sole 4 side, and the toe 5 and the heel 6 side are set as free ends. b. Conversely, the toe 5 side and the heel 6 side are fixed, and the crown 3 side and the heel 4 side are free ends.

In another embodiment shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the face member 2A in the previous embodiment is integrated with the material forming the other face 2, and is made thinner than the other material. A groove 2 '(detailed illustration omitted) in the face height direction is formed on the back side, and a plate 7 is fitted into this groove 2'. Then, welding 8 is performed on both sides of the plate material 7 in the vertical direction of the face height (four places), and the other parts are free.

In each of the embodiments described above, the double portion W is provided in the height direction of the face surface 2, that is, in the vertical direction.
And as shown in FIG. 6, the length direction of the face surface 2, that is,
It can be provided horizontally from the toe 5 to the heel 6, or can be provided diagonally. In either case, the double part W is provided so as to include the sweet area.

Another embodiment shown in FIGS. 7 and 8 shows a double part W having an elliptical shape. Only the left and right sides of this oval double part W are welded 8. The shape of the double portion W may be a circle, a triangle, a square, or another shape, in addition to the ellipse.

As described above, according to the present invention, since only a part of the face including the sweet area is constituted by at least the face member and the plate material, when the ball is hit by the double part, the face becomes The amount of deformation of the head increases, the amount of energy stored in the deflection of the head increases, the initial speed of the hit ball can be increased, and the flight distance can be increased.
Due to the fact that the face surface is easily deformed, on the other hand, the deformation of the ball is small, and the energy loss of the ball can be suppressed and the coefficient of restitution can be increased. Further, since the double structure portion of the face surface is limited to the vicinity of the sweet area, even when the ball is hit with the core removed, the unnecessary spin amount is suppressed and the directionality of the hit ball is improved. In addition, the portion of the plate material to be joined to the head is only a part of the peripheral edge, and the other portions are not joined, so that an increase in the weight of the weld overlay is suppressed. Further, the thickness of the face surface other than the double portion can be reduced, and the weight of the reduced portion can be distributed to the periphery or to the sole to control the position of the center of gravity.
