Description
前記第1の液晶表示パネルの画像表示面側、及び前記バックライト装置と前記第2の液晶表示パネルとの間にのみ配置した偏光板と、直交する2つの偏光成分の光の内で、偏光方向に一致する偏光成分の光は透過し、一致しない偏光成分の光を反射する第1のSP波反射板とを備え、
前記第1のSP波反射板は、前記第1の液晶表示パネルと前記第2の液晶表示パネルとの間に配置され、前記第2の液晶表示パネルを透過したバックライト光の内で、前記遮光領域に対応するバックライト光を前記第2の液晶表示パネルに反射する液晶表示装置である。
図1は本発明の実施形態1の液晶表示装置の概略構成を説明するための断面図であり、以下、図1に基づいて、実施形態1の液晶表示装置の全体構成を説明する。ただし、以下の説明では、偏光板POL及びSP波反射板BEMを除く、プリズムシートや拡散板等の周知の光学シートは省略する。
実施形態1の液晶表示装置においては、図1に示すバックライト装置BLUから照射されたバックライト光は、まず、第2のSP波反射板BEM2により直交する2つの偏光成分の光(バックライト光)の内で、偏光方向に一致する偏光成分の光は透過し、一致しない偏光成分の光は反射されてバックライト装置BLUに戻されることとなる。第2のSP波反射板BEM2を透過したバックライト光は、第2の偏光板POL2で、予め設定され偏光方向の光のみが透過され、その他の偏光方向の光は第2の偏光板POL2で吸収されることとなる。このとき、SP波反射板BEM1,2は偏光特性を有するが、偏光板POL1〜3に比較するとその偏光性能が低いので、実施形態1においては、SP波反射板BEM1,2と共に偏光板POL1,2とを配置する構成としている。
2D表示時においても、バックライト装置BLUから照射されたバックライト光は、第2のSP波反射板BEM2により偏光方向に一致する偏光成分の光は透過し、一致しない偏光成分の光は反射されてバックライト装置BLUに反射されると共に、該第2のSP波編者板BEM2を透過したバックライト光は、第2の偏光板POL2で偏光方向の光のみが透過される。
図7は本発明の実施形態2の液晶表示装置の概略構成を説明するための図であり、第1の液晶表示パネルLCD1と第2の液晶表示パネルLCD2との間に第1のSP波反射板BEM1のみを配置する構成を除く他の構成は、実施形態1の液晶表示装置と同様となる。従って、以下の説明では、第1の液晶表示パネルLCD1と第2の液晶表示パネルLCD2との間に第1のSP波反射板BEM1について詳細に説明する。
本発明の実施形態3の液晶表示装置は、実施形態2の液晶表示装置における3D表示時におけるローブ(視域)を拡大した液晶表示装置である。

Claims (4)
- 画像表示を行う第1の液晶表示パネルと、前記第1の液晶表示パネルの裏面側に配置され、透過領域と遮光領域との視差バリアパターンの表示を行う第2の液晶表示パネルと、前記第2の液晶表示パネルの裏面側に配置され、バックライト光を照射するバックライト装置とを備え、
前記第2の液晶表示パネルを介して前記第1の液晶表示パネルにバックライト光を照射する液晶表示装置であって、
前記第1の液晶表示パネルの画像表示面側、及び前記バックライト装置と前記第2の液晶表示パネルとの間にのみ配置した偏光板と、
直交する2つの偏光成分の光の内で、偏光方向に一致する偏光成分の光は透過し、一致しない偏光成分の光を反射する第1のSP波反射板とを備え、
前記第1のSP波反射板は、前記第1の液晶表示パネルと前記第2の液晶表示パネルとの間に配置され、前記第2の液晶表示パネルを透過したバックライト光の内で、前記遮光領域に対応するバックライト光を前記第2の液晶表示パネルに反射することを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記第1のSP波反射板の偏光方向と、前記バックライト装置と前記第2の液晶表示パネルの間に配置された前記偏光板の偏光方向が直交して配置されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 直交する2つの偏光成分の光の内で、偏光方向に一致する偏光成分の光は透過し、一致しない偏光成分の光を反射する第2のSP波反射板を備え、
前記第2のSP波反射板は、前記第2の液晶表示パネルと前記バックライト装置との間であり、かつ前記バックライト装置と前記第2の液晶表示パネルとの間に配置した前記偏光板よりも前記バックライト装置側に配置され、前記第1のSP波反射板の偏光方向と前記第2のSP波反射板の偏光方向とが直交して配置されていることを特徴とする請求項1又は2に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記第2の液晶表示パネルは、ノーマリーホワイトのねじれネマティック液晶表示パネルからなることを特徴とする請求項1乃至3の内の何れかに記載の液晶表示装置。
