Abstract

To provide a two-hole nest box with a separate escape hole for dealing with external enemies such as snakes through the entrance and exit holes.
[Solution] In addition to the hole 7 in the front board, a hole 8 is drilled in one of the two side boards to make a total of two holes in the nest box. This allows the bird to escape through the other hole even if an enemy such as a snake invades through one of the holes.

Description

This invention relates to a two-hole nest box with a separate escape hole to protect against external enemies such as snakes, dormice, mice, and martens.

Birds use nest boxes to raise their young, but conventional bird nest boxes only had one hole, meaning that if predators such as snakes, dormice, mice or martens entered through the hole, the parent birds had no way to escape and were sometimes eaten by the predator.

In conventional nest boxes with one hole, birds nesting there cannot escape when predators such as snakes, dormice, mice, or martens invade through a hole in the nest box. This new system aims to solve the above-mentioned drawback by increasing the number of holes to allow the birds to escape.

Conventional beehives only have one hole in the front, but this invention solves the problem by providing holes in the sides as well, allowing the birds to escape through a hole other than the one they entered through when predators such as snakes, dormice, mice, and martens invade.

From 2022 to 2024, a combination of traditional one-hole nest boxes and the newly invented two-hole nest boxes was installed, and it was confirmed that the birds preferred the two-hole nest boxes over the one-hole ones. It is believed that the birds preferred to use the nest boxes with escape openings. Furthermore, during this experiment, the parent birds were not attacked inside the nest boxes.

In addition to the hole in the front, a hole is made on either the left or right side so that birds nesting in the box can escape from predators such as snakes, dormice, mice, and martens that may enter through the holes. There should be two holes, including the one in the front. The size of the hole is not specified as it varies depending on the target bird species. The creation of two holes is a distinctive feature of this bird box.

An example will be described below with reference to the attached drawings. The material of a birdhouse is often wood, but it is not limited to wood. A typical birdhouse is made up of six boards in total: one front board (1), two side boards (2), one roof board (3), one bottom board (4), and one back board (5). A hole is drilled in the back board (5) to pass a string through to tie it to a tree.

The front board of 1 has a hole like 7, through which the birds can enter and exit. In this invention, a hole is made in one of the two side boards of 2, making a birdhouse with a total of two holes.

The holes to be drilled on the sides will be explained using two examples: a circular hole like the one on the front, as in 8, and a square hole at the top end of the board, as in 9. However, the shape of the hole is not specified as long as it is large enough for the target bird to enter and exit.

Bird nests are used to conserve birds in urban parks and home gardens where there is a shortage of tree cavities due to the small size of the trees and the birds that use tree cavities are unable to nest.In natural forests and planted forests where there is a shortage of tree cavities, it is hoped that using bird nests will reduce the number of leaf-eating insects, promote photosynthesis, and increase the amount of CO2 absorbed.

Claims (1)

A box-shaped nest box used by birds. Conventional structures have only one entrance hole, so if an enemy invades through that hole, there is no escape route. Instead, a second hole is provided to allow the bird to escape.
