The following describes a television toy (hereinafter simply referred to as a "toy") according to one embodiment of the present invention, with reference to the attached drawings.

(Toy composition)
The toy of this embodiment has as its basic components a housing 1, a display panel 2, a medium insertion section 3, a switch 4, and a light-emitting section 5 (see FIGS. 1 to 4).

The screen panel 2 is attached to an opening formed on the front of the housing 1 so that it can be seen from outside the housing 1. The screen panel 2 is a transparent resin plate such as acrylic resin on which a predetermined image is printed, and when illuminated with light, the image becomes brighter and easier for the user to see. There are no particular restrictions on the predetermined image, but it could be, for example, an image of a specific character in a television program. This image is a still image. It is also possible to use holography technology to generate the image, making it possible to display a three-dimensional image.

The medium insertion section 3 is formed in the housing 1, and the simulated medium 6 can be inserted inside. A lid 31 is attached to the entrance of the medium insertion section 3, which closes the entrance of the medium insertion section 3 when not in use. In addition, in this embodiment, when the switch 4 is turned on, the speaker 9 is driven by the operation of the processing unit 82, and the sound recorded in the recording unit 81 can be played back. This further enhances the impression that the video stored in the simulated medium 6 is being played back.

Then, when the user presses the eject button 10, the simulated medium 6 is pushed back and ejected from the medium insertion section 3 by an appropriate ejection mechanism. This returns the cover 31 to its initial state, allowing it to close the medium insertion section 3.

Furthermore, when the eject button 10 is operated to move the simulated medium 6 away from the switch 4, the switch 4 turns off, which in turn turns off the light-emitting unit 5, the speaker 9, etc. This causes the screen panel 2 to go dark, giving the user the impression that the television has been turned off. Furthermore, this impression can be further strengthened by stopping the sound from the speaker 9 as well.

For example, in the above embodiment, a simulated video cassette was used as the simulated medium 6, but a simulated optical disk such as a DVD disk may also be used. In this case, it is preferable that the medium insertion portion 3 has a shape suitable for inserting an optical disk (for example, a thin slot shape). The switch 4 is appropriately configured so that it is turned on by the inserted simulated medium 6.
