Abstract
Description
本出願は、ELECTRONICALLY DIMMABLE MIRRORという名称の、2012年1月31日出願の米国仮特許出願第61/592,883号明細書からの優先権及びその他の利益を主張し、参照のためその全体を本明細書に援用する。
(a)能動吸収偏光子は、電圧の印加によって活性化されたときに、x方向に吸収軸を有し、
(b)第1の静的反射偏光子は、x方向に反射軸を有し、
(c)能動偏極回転子は、最大電圧の印加によって活性化されたときに、入射光の偏極軸を90°だけ回転し、
(d)第2の静的反射偏光子は、y方向に反射軸を有し、
電圧が印加されると光学装置の反射率が低減される。装置の反射率のレベルは、零電圧設定と最大電圧設定との間の可変電圧を印加することにより変えることができる。
(a)能動吸収偏光子は、活性化されたときに、x方向に吸収軸を有し、
(b)第1及び第2の静的反射偏光子は、x方向に反射軸を有し、
(c)能動偏極回転子は、非活性状態のときに、入射光の偏極軸を90°だけ回転し、
電圧が印加されたときに光学装置の反射率が低減される。装置の反射率のレベルは、零電圧設定と最大電圧設定との間の可変電圧を印加することにより変えることができる。
本明細書の中で別途特に定義されないかぎり、線偏光、円偏光、未偏光などの光学パラメータの定義は、“Principles of Optics Electromagnetic Theory of Propagation, Interference and Diffraction of light", Max Born, et al., Cambridge University Press; 7th edition October 13, 1999のものと同じである。
同様に、本明細書で特に定義されないすべての液晶用語はLiquid Crystals Applications and Uses, vol.3, edited by B. Bahadur, published by World Scientific Publishing Co.Pte.Ltd., 1992 ("Bahadur")において使用される定義を有するものとする。
反射偏光子は、この場合、その構成に応じて右又は左旋回偏波のいずれかを反射し、他の偏波(左又は右旋回)をそれぞれ透過する。
図1及び2に、調光システム用に設計された第1の構成アセンブリ10を示す。第1の構成アセンブリ10は以下の層を含む:装置の可視面13において(活性化されると)x方向に吸収軸を有する能動偏光子12、x方向に反射軸を有する隣接する静的反射偏光子14、隣接する能動偏極回転子16、y方向に反射軸を有する隣接する静的反射偏光子18。能動偏光子と能動偏極回転子は独立に動作され得るということに注意すべきである。
図3及び図4に示される別の実施形態では、調光システム用に設計された第2の構成が示される。システム50は、活性化されるとx方向に吸収軸を有する能動偏光子52、x方向に反射軸を有する隣接する第1の静的反射偏光子54、隣接する能動偏極回転子56、続いてx方向に反射軸を有する第2の静的反射偏光子58を含む。能動偏光子52と能動偏極回転子56は独立に動作され得るということに注意すべきである。

Claims (22)
- a.能動吸収偏光子と、
b.第1の静的反射偏光子と、
c.能動偏極回転子と、
d.第2の静的反射偏光子と、
を含む電子的調光可能光学装置であって、
前記能動吸収偏光子及び前記能動偏極回転子の両端に電圧を印加することによって前記装置の反射率及び/又は透過率が制御(増加又は低減)され得るよう構成された、光学装置。 - 到達するすべての光を吸収する、前記第2の静的反射偏光子に隣接するビームストップを更に含む、請求項1に記載の光学装置。
- a.前記能動吸収偏光子は、電圧の印加によって活性化されたときに、x方向に吸収軸を有し、
b.前記第1の静的反射偏光子は、前記x方向に反射軸を有し、
c.前記能動偏極回転子は、電圧の印加によって活性化されたときに、入射光の偏極軸を90°だけ回転させ、

前記電圧が印加されたときに、前記光学装置の反射率が低減される、請求項1に記載の光学装置。 - 前記装置は、可視スペクトルの選択的波長を反射する調光可能ミラーである、請求項1に記載の光学装置。
- 前記装置は、可視スペクトルの選択的波長を吸収する調光可能ミラーである、請求項1に記載の光学装置。
- 前記装置は、前記装置が電圧の印加によって活性化されないときに最小透過率を有する透過装置である、請求項1に記載の光学装置。
- 前記装置は、最大電圧が前記能動吸収偏光子及び/又は前記能動偏極回転子の両端に印加されるときに最小透過率を有する透過装置である、請求項1に記載の光学装置。
- 前記装置の前記反射率/透過率は、自動的に、手動で、又は自動と手動制御の両方の組み合わせで制御される、請求項1に記載の光学装置。
- 前記装置は、前記装置の最大反射率状態にあるときに入射光の50%超を反射する、請求項1に記載の光学装置。
- 前記装置の最大反射状態と最小反射状態との間の振幅(又はコントラスト)は、50%より大きい、請求項1に記載の光学装置。
- 前記装置は、前記装置の最小反射率状態にあるときに入射光の20%未満を反射する、請求項1に記載の光学装置。
- 選択される偏極レベルは、前記能動吸収偏光子における前記電圧を制御することにより選択され、前記能動吸収偏光子を前記選択された偏極レベルに設定することで、前記装置により生成される画像の明るさを決定する、請求項1に記載の光学装置。
- 前記能動吸収偏光子を制御するための制御装置を更に含み、
前記制御装置は、前記能動吸収偏光子と結合され、
前記能動吸収偏光子は、2つ以上の部分に分割され、
前記制御装置は、前記部分の各々を各偏極レベルに設定する、請求項1に記載の光学装置。 - 制御装置と結合した少なくとも1つの光検出器を更に含み、
前記少なくとも1つの光検出器は、少なくとも1つの光強度値を与え、
前記制御装置は、前記少なくとも1つの光強度値に従って前記能動吸収偏光子を選択された偏極レベルに設定する、請求項1に記載の光学装置。 - 前記光学装置の非可視側に配置されたディスプレイを更に含み、前記ディスプレイから放射された光の少なくとも一部は、前記光学装置の可視面まで透過される、請求項1に記載の光学装置。

- 光学装置から反射される光を低減する方法であって、
請求項1の光学装置を使用する工程と、
前記光学装置の反射率を変えるために電圧を前記前記光学装置に印加する工程と
を含む方法。 - 前記能動偏光子を、エネルギーが与えられていないときに非吸収状態に設定し、かつ、電圧の印加によりエネルギーが与えられたときに入射光のx方向偏波を吸収し、y方向偏波を透過するように設定する工程と、

前記能動偏極回転子を、エネルギーが与えられていないときに影響が無いように設定し、かつ、最大電圧によりエネルギーが与えられたときに、光の偏極方向を最大90°まで回転するように設定する工程と
を含む請求項18に記載の方法。 - 可視面能動偏光子を、エネルギーが与えられていないときに非吸収状態に設定し、かつ、電圧の印加によりエネルギーが与えられたときに、入射光のx方向偏波を吸収し、y方向偏波を透過するように設定する工程と、
前記第1及び第2の静的反射偏光子を、前記光のx方向偏波を反射するように設定する工程と、
前記能動偏極回転子を、最大電圧によりエネルギーが与えられたときに、影響が無いように設定するが、エネルギーが与えられていない状態のときに、光の偏極方向を90°だけ回転するように設定する工程と
を含む請求項18に記載の方法。 - 装置への可変電圧の印加により可変強度で光を反射する方法であって、
入射光を、前記装置の可視面に能動吸収偏光子を有する前記装置の前記可視面の方向へ導き、続いて、第1の静的(非切り替え可能)反射偏光子、能動(電気的切り替え可能)偏極回転子、及び第2の静的(切り替え不能)反射偏光子へ導く工程を含み、
エネルギーが与えられていない状態にあるときに、前記装置が最大反射率を有し、かつ、
前記能動偏光子及び/又は前記能動偏極回転子へ印加される最大電圧によって活性化されたときに、前記装置が最小反射率を有するように設定される、方法。 - 装置への可変電圧の印加により可変強度で光を反射する方法であって、
入射光を、前記装置の可視面に能動吸収偏光子を有する前記装置の前記可視面の方向へ導き、続いて、第1の静的(非切り替え可能)反射偏光子、能動(電気的切り替え可能)偏極回転子、及び第2の静的(切り替え不能)反射偏光子に導く工程を含み、
エネルギーが与えられていない状態にあるときに、前記装置が最小反射率を有し、かつ、
前記能動偏光子及び/又は前記能動偏極回転子へ印加された最大電圧によって活性化されたときに、前記装置が最大反射率を有するように設定される、方法。
