Abstract
Description
セルロース系基材(24ポイントのサイジング処理していないクラフト紙)を異なるハロシラン溶液で個別に処理した。第1のハロシラン化合物がメチルトリクロロシランからなり、第2のハロシラン化合物がジメジルジクロロシランからなるハロシラン溶液について試験を行った。各ハロシラン溶液は、ハロシラン溶液全体(溶媒のペンタンを含む)の全重量に対して2.5(低い処理レベル)及び10(高い処理レベル)重量%(wt%)のハロシラン化合物を含み、ジメチルジクロロシランに対するメチルトリクロロシランのモル比率(%)を変化させた。詳細には、クロロシラン溶液中の第1及び第2のハロシラン化合物の範囲を、第1のハロシラン化合物(メチルトリクロロシラン)が100モル%、80モル%又は60モル%を構成するように変化させた。したがって、各ハロシラン溶液はそれぞれ0モル%、20モル%又は40モル%の第2のハロシラン化合物(ジメチルジクロロシラン)を更に含んだ。各ハロシラン溶液は、適当な量のメチルトリクロロシラン及びジメジルジクロロシランを溶媒としてのペンタンと混合することによって調製した。紙は、約22℃で相対湿度50%で供給した。紙は、一方の表面をハロシラン溶液で処理しながら10フィート/分(0.051m/s)〜30フィート/分(0.152m/s)の速度で供給した。
ハロシランの各混合物の組成を表1に示す。
複雑さが増大する複数のハロシラン混合物を更に用いて24ポイントのクラフト紙を処理した。全ハロシラン溶液(溶媒であるペンタンを含む)に対して2.5重量%(wt%)を含むこれらのハロシラン溶液を、基材中の水及びカルビノール基と反応して架橋樹脂を形成する一定の範囲のハロシランの平均官能度にわたるように選択した。平均官能度が2以下である場合には、直鎖状のポリマー及びオリゴマーのみが生成する。架橋構造は、平均官能度が2よりも大きい場合に形成され得る。一例として、また、いずれか1つの特定の理論によって束縛されることを意図するものではないが、架橋された材料又は樹脂は、各成分の平均官能度が2に近いが2よりも大きい場合に「軟かい」、すなわち柔軟な材料となる傾向がある。各成分の平均官能度の値が2を上回り、3又は4に近づいた後、架橋された構造又は樹脂は、靱性、脆性又はその両方の性質を示し得る。この例では、トリメチルクロロシラン、ジメチルジクロロシラン、メチルトリクロロシラン及び四塩化ケイ素のモル比を、紙の内部かつ全体にわたって形成される樹脂の性質が軟らかいから固くて脆い範囲で変化するよう、平均官能度が2.1〜3.7の範囲で変化するように選択した。得られたクロロシランの範囲は、10〜20モル%のトリメチルクロロシラン、10〜70モル%のジメチルジクロロシラン、30〜60モル%のメチルトリクロロシラン及び5〜70モル%の四塩化ケイ素であった。処理溶液の異なる組成を下記表3に示す。
基材に耐水性を付与することが望ましい他の用途(例えば石積みの保護)においても使用されるもののような、エチル、プロピル又はオクチル置換基を有するシランについても検討した。こうしたシランは、それぞれ、エチレン、1−プロペン又は1−オクテンによるトリクロロシランの白金触媒を用いたヒドロシリル化反応によって得ることができる。追加的な工程であること、かつ白金触媒の高いコストのために、これらの化合物の製造には更なるコストが発生し得る。セルロース系基材の処理などの特定の用途においてこれらの物質を使用する際の全体のコストの低減を目的とした経路では、これらの物質をより安価な化学物質の混合物中の成分として取り入れる。このアプローチの更なる利点として、単一のクロロシランで処理したセルロース系基材と比較して性能を向上させることができることがある。
溶液濃度、溶液の塗布速度及び紙の供給速度の既知の変量を用いて、セルロース系基材に塗布したクロロシランの量から付着率を計算した。処理した紙に含まれる樹脂の量は、樹脂をモノマー性アルコキシシラン単位に変換し、これを、「The Analytical Chemistry of Silicones」A.LeeSmith編、Chemical Analysis Vol.112,Wiley−Interscience(ISBN 0−471−51624−4)、210〜211ページに述べられる手順に従って、ガスクロマトグラフィーによって定量化することによって求めることができる。次いで、紙の中の樹脂の量を、塗布したクロロシランの量で割ることによって付着率を求めることができる。
Claims (25)
- 少なくとも第1のハロシラン化合物と、該第1のハロシラン化合物とは異なる第2のハロシラン化合物とを含む複数のハロシラン化合物を与える工程で、該複数のハロシラン化合物が20モル%以下のモノハロシランと、70モル%以下のモノハロシラン及びジハロシランと、少なくとも30%のトリハロシラン及びテトラハロシランとを含む全ハロシラン濃度を有する工程と、
セルロース系基材を前記複数のハロシラン化合物で処理する工程で、当該複数のハロシラン化合物を1つ以上の液体として塗布する工程とを備えるセルロース系基材を疎水化する方法。 - 前記複数のハロシラン化合物のそれぞれが、式RnSiClmH(4−n−m)(式中、n=0〜3、m=1〜4であり、Rは1〜20個の炭素原子を有するアルキル、アリール、アラルキル又はアルカリル基である)を有する請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記ハロシラン化合物のそれぞれをメチルトリクロロシラン、ジメチルジクロロシラン、エチルトリクロロシラン、ジエチルジクロロシラン、プロピルトリクロロシラン、ジフェニルジクロロシラン、オクチルトリクロロシラン及びテトラクロロシランから選択する請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記複数のハロシラン化合物をハロシラン溶液として供給する請求項1〜3のいずれか一項に記載の方法。
- 前記ハロシラン溶液が非極性溶媒を更に含む請求項4に記載の方法。
- 前記溶媒をイソペンタン、ペンタン、ヘキサン、ヘプタン及び石油エーテルから選択する請求項5に記載の方法。
- 前記複数のハロシラン化合物が、20モル%〜95モル%のトリハロシランを含む全ハロシラン濃度を有する請求項1〜6のいずれか一項に記載の方法。
- 前記複数のハロシラン化合物が、50モル%〜90モル%のトリハロシランを含む全ハロシラン濃度を有する請求項1〜6のいずれか一項に記載の方法。
- 前記複数のハロシラン化合物が、5モル%〜95モル%のテトラハロシランを含む全ハロシラン濃度を有する請求項1〜8のいずれか一項に記載の方法。
- 前記複数のハロシラン化合物が、50モル%〜90モル%のテトラハロシランを含む全ハロシラン濃度を有する請求項1〜8のいずれか一項に記載の方法。
- 前記複数のハロシラン化合物が、前記第1のハロシラン化合物及び第2のハロシラン化合物と異なる第3のハロシラン化合物を更に含む請求項1〜10のいずれか一項に記載の方法。
- 前記複数のハロシラン化合物による処理後、前記セルロース系基材を塩基性化合物に曝露する工程を更に備える請求項1〜11のいずれか一項に記載の方法。
- 前記塩基性化合物が、アンモニアガスを含む請求項12に記載の方法。
- 前記セルロース系基材が紙、厚紙、ボール紙、木材、木材製品、ウォールボード、繊維製品、デンプン、綿又はウールを含む請求項1〜13のいずれか一項に記載の方法。
- 前記セルロース系基材が、紙、厚紙又はボール紙を含む請求項1〜13のいずれか一項に記載の方法。
- 90重量%〜99.99重量%のセルロース系基材と、
0.01重量%〜10重量%のシリコーン樹脂とを含み、
前記シリコーン樹脂が、少なくとも第1のハロシラン化合物と、該第1のハロシラン化合物とは異なる第2のハロシラン化合物とを含む複数のハロシラン化合物で前記セルロース系基材を処理することによって生成し、前記複数のハロシラン化合物が1つ以上の液体として塗布し、かつ20モル%以下のモノハロシランと、70モル%以下のモノハロシラン及びジハロシランと、少なくとも30%のトリハロシラン及びテトラハロシランとを含む全ハロシラン濃度を有する疎水性セルロース系基材。 - 99.1重量%〜99.9重量%のセルロース系基材と、0.1重量%〜0.9重量%のシリコーン樹脂とを含む請求項16に記載の疎水性セルロース系基材。
- 前記複数のハロシラン化合物のそれぞれが、式RnSiClmH(4−n−m)(式中、n=0〜3、m=1〜4であり、Rは1〜20個の炭素原子を有するアルキル、アリール、アラルキル又はアルカリル基である)を有する請求項16又は17に記載の疎水性セルロース系基材。
- 前記第1のハロシラン化合物をメチルトリクロロシラン、ジメチルジクロロシラン、エチルトリクロロシラン、ジエチルジクロロシラン、プロピルトリクロロシラン、ジフェニルジクロロシラン、オクチルトリクロロシラン及びテトラクロロシランから選択する請求項16又は17に記載の疎水性セルロース系基材。
- 前記複数のハロシラン化合物をハロシラン溶液として供給する請求項16〜19のいずれか一項に記載の疎水性セルロース系基材。
- 前記ハロシラン溶液が、非極性溶媒を更に含む請求項20に記載の疎水性セルロース系基材。
- 前記セルロース系基材が、厚さ1ミル(0.0254mm)〜150ミル(3.81mm)である請求項16〜21のいずれか一項に記載の疎水性セルロース系基材。
- 前記セルロース系基材が、厚さ5ミル(0.127mm)〜45ミル(1.14mm)である請求項16〜21のいずれか一項に記載の疎水性セルロース系基材。
- 前記セルロース系基材が紙、厚紙、ボール紙、木材、木材製品、ウォールボード、繊維製品、デンプン、綿又はウールを含む請求項16〜23のいずれか一項に記載の疎水性セルロース系基材。
- 前記セルロース系基材が紙、厚紙又はボール紙を含む請求項16〜23のいずれか一項に記載の疎水性セルロース系基材。
