Description
本発明者らは重合工程時における重合体付着物の生成のメカニズムに着目し、重合工程中に気化した重合性単量体が重合容器内の気相部で凝縮し、これが重合容器内壁や撹拌機表面などへ移行し、そこで重合することによりこれが起点となって重合体付着物が成長することを解明し、この知見をもとに鋭意検討を行った結果、以下の方法を見出した。
(1)重合性単量体及び着色剤を少なくとも含有する重合性単量体組成物を水系媒体に加え、該水系媒体中で該重合性単量体組成物を造粒して該重合性単量体組成物の粒子を形成し、該重合性単量体組成物の該粒子に含まれる該重合性単量体を重合してトナー粒子を得るトナー粒子の製造方法であって、
該重合性単量体の重合が行なわれる重合装置は、少なくとも重合容器を有し、該重合容器内では、該重合性単量体組成物の粒子を有する水系媒体の液相部と、気相部とが形成され、
該重合容器には該気相部を排気するためのベント配管およびキャリアガスの導入配管が設けられており、
該重合性単量体の重合転化率が少なくとも80%に達するまでの間に、該気相部に温度が40℃以上120℃以下であるキャリアガスを導入し、且つ重合容器内のガスをベント配管から排気することを特徴とする重合トナーの製造方法。
(2)該キャリアガスが空気、窒素及び水蒸気から選ばれる気体のうちの1種の気体、または2種以上の混合気体であることを特徴とする(1)に記載の重合トナーの製造方法。
(3)該キャリアガスが該重合容器に導入される際の温度と該重合性単量体の重合温度との温度差が10℃以内であることを特徴とする(1)または(2)に記載の重合トナーの製造方法。
(4)該重合容器に導入されるキャリアガスの流量F(m3/h)と、該気相部の容積V(m3)との関係が0.002≦(V/F)≦0.100を満たすことを特徴とする(1)乃至(3)のいずれかに記載の重合トナーの製造方法。
(5)該重合容器の該気相部を外部ジャケットにより加熱することを特徴とする(1)乃至(4)のいずれかに記載の重合トナーの製造方法。
(6)該外部ジャケットの内部温度と該重合性単量体の重合温度との温度差が10℃以内であることを特徴とする(5)に記載の重合トナーの製造方法。
