このようなテレビの音声は、内蔵スピーカ又は外付けのスピーカで再生されることになるが、内蔵スピーカの場合はディスプレイとの相互位置関係により内蔵場所が決定される。薄型ディスプレイによりテレビ本体は薄型になるのでスピーカの内蔵場所の制約が大きくなり、奥行きは当然小さく、スペースの制約から縦と横の寸法も余裕を持って決められない。また、ディスプレイを納めた外装寸法(正面から見た寸法)も、できるだけ小さくすることが求められているのが現状である。
CRTディスプレイを内蔵する従来のテレビは、スピーカ装置を奥行き方向に配置するものがあり、例えば、特許文献1及び特許文献2に示すものがあった。特許文献1のスピーカ装置は、スピーカを2箇所に内蔵し、一方のスピーカは、フロントスピーカとしてコーン形スピーカを設置し、そこから出た音は前方に開口するホーン状の音道を経て導かれ、他方のスピーカは、上部スピーカとして上向きに開口する全方位性のコーン形スピーカであった。また、特許文献2のスピーカ装置は、テレビの両サイドにコーン形スピーカと扁平なホーン状音道で構成されていた。
