Abstract
The matting of looped filaments is developed from an initial filament looping build-up (A) with a low density of a number of extruded filaments (2a) of thermoplastic material, from a spinarette (1). The jet openings are displaced from each other longitudinally and laterally, and filaments are held on the surface of boiling water to keep the filament temp. close to the melting temp. The filament bundle (2a) drops vertically to the water and then sinks at a controlled speed less than the extrusion speed. At the same time, a further thermoplastic layer (B) of a higher density is fed by a conveyor (4) at a speed matching the sinking speed of the first filament supply. At the end of the conveyor (4), the second feed (B) sinks in the cooling water on the outer side of the other looped filaments (A) so that they bond together at their contact surfaces.
